Default No more SXRD'S?

Sony has just announced they will no longer produce SXRD rear projection TV's anymore...no more projections period.....All this after Sony reported that their projection TV's outsold all other version of their TV's last quarter! this is so they can focus on their LCD TV's. The sad thing is now you will have to fork over 6 or 7 grand if you want a 60" or bigger TV from now on, since I don't see the prices ever coming way down. Their new 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio LCD TV's are gonna be EXTREMELY expensive! I think Sony should be a little more careful with their consumers, if they want to keep on top of the consumer electronics market...(as they claim they are?). Do they really think we are all made of $?

The Samsung DLPs and Mitsubishi RPs are still around.

But it will be sometime before those OLEDs with their ridiculous contrast ratio become mainstream.

IMO it has as much to do with retailers .. BB shuffles anything that isn't LCD or Plasma to the back corner of their store .. not sure if it's because the RPTV's take up too much space for display and inventory storage .. combined with the margins they get on them...but they treat them like 3 eyed stepchildren at their stores.

As you can see by my sig I think they are the best value on the market. Instead of getting a 52" XBR4 - we were able to get the 55" SXRD plus the 80GB and 40GB PS3's plus about another $1000 worth of gifts and misc items...to put it in perspective.

Default Horrible

Horrible decision. SXRDs had the best picture of any TV, and sold very good. Sony is dumb.

Focusing on fewer product lines is actually a smart move by Sony and something they have needed to do for a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long time IMO. We will need to see what happens with LCD prices in a year or so to determine if it's actually horrible for consumers...the competition is certainly heating up in the LCD/Plasma market.

problem goes right thru distribution, the dam things are bulky, costly to ship, take up large demo space etc.

Sales have also been dropping while large LCD panel sales have been rising.

SXRD also had a few issues with many returns.

I dont think the low sales make it a worthwhile line anymore, more so when it really only sold in the north american market.

I dont think Samsung is planning on dropping there DLP because they are leading the way with the 3D tachnology in there home with there Samsung DLP and Mitsubishi Diamond also has it with there DLP. Yet Samsung already has shown it working just fixin the kinks. Planned full stream by end of 08

You know what really stinks? Sony Canada hasn't brought the A3000 series into Canada. All we can get is the A2020.

I'm considering going down to Buffalo and bringing back an A3000, while I can.

Well there goes my KDSZ70XBR5. I was really looking forward to that tv.
Back to my original thoughts of the Elite 60. Although I am still not convinced that its worth the upcharge from the standard 60. Biggest thing i've found is there a lot more tweaks for the Elite, but the PQ seems to be about the same when both are calibrated properly. Hhmm.......

You fellas do realize there is such a thing as front projector right?

The Sxrd front projectors look great and have been coming way down in price.

Why not just strech a canvas,.. mount the pj to the ceiling (out of anyone's way), run the cables though the walls, and let you screen be as big as your throw distance allows?

If they are scrapping Sxrd FP's then that's news I would be concerned about.

They already scrapped CRT FP's which is what I currently use and love. But parts will still be available for a couple more years.

Glad I have mine for now plus two free bulbs replacments I'm good til the prices level off on the LCD's - there's much to be said about the LCos and of course the Bravia LCD's are awsome.

It would be nice if they'd take up plasma. IMO plasma > LCD.

If you don't have a room where you can control the lighting FPTVs are NOT the way to go...that's why the RP SXRDs were so fantastic.
