Looks like we are finally going to see the Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here SACD after all these years. Interesting to see a major band re-issue an album on a format that has such a niche market. They must really trust their engineer as SACD is James' hi-rez format of choice. I'm very happy!

I wouldn't break out the hats and hooters just yet. This title has been rumored for many years (since about 2001) and never materialized. Until I see a release date and see it on my shelf, I'll remain skeptical. Don't mean to rain on the parade, but just trying to put some perspective on the news.

"but be prepared for a BIG surprise when it finally does surface"
And what does this mean? Perhaps the whole catalog in SACD or Even Blu-ray audio? Perhaps the whole catalog released on Blu? My mind is going all over the place with this one. |

Actually, while I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, I don't really like these releases. They always manage to remix the entire album, which if you know the albums by heart, is completely jarring. Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds wasn't the same in its SACD release. |

Yes, they are both optical-based media. Yes, they use the same basic technological philosophy and methods (a "laser" reading holes in a layered disc). But saying that Blu is a next-generation DVD-A? And comparing it's 'success' (when even Blu video is still within it's first year of general public acceptance) to a format that is not only past it's peak, but even AT it's peak, hadn't even the slightest FRACTION of recognition that Blu video has currently... *Sigh* Insert Debbie Downer Trombone 'whaaant-whaaaaah' here... Sorry, they're great, but they ARE last generation. The focus needs to be on advancing the cause of Blu-Audio to replace a technology (or 'brand', if you like...) that has not succeeded. I'm not going to say failed, because I'm sure that could be argued against, but face it - 8-track was more 'successful'... https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mu...on-thread.html Doc Last edited by doctorsteve; 03-07-2011 at 02:48 AM. |

Physical media is not going to disappear, and as a recent television commercial highlights - newer/better technology has a habit of trumping old. As I see it - there is room for both newer technologies (downloads and physical in nature). With thousands of existing SACDs and DVD-As (but with only a lingering audience for the Brands), the companies that hold the rights for these products are not going to be relying solely on digital downloads to keep their cash flows healthy. I'd say that part of the 'snobbery' that many people allege about Audiophilism is the inherent 'look what I've got' attitude that some have about their collections and equipment (and that's not MY accusation, by the way - I'm as guilty of that as anyone). That takes physical media. You can't point to a single hard drive sitting on a lonely shelf and be impressive. You need a massive Walnut shelf with thousands of plastic cases and paper sleeves to be King of your particular castle. (This particular point is anecdotal, but still just to illustrate the point that SACD still sells, versus the Audiophile clamoring for digital download of hi-def material). I consider Downloads as disposable media, and feel that people will always want something they can hold onto... and rip to their latest ipod. Sorry this rant has gotten so off-topic, but you just don't get the same experience with a download. I want that cover art with the fiery handshake, and I want it bigger than a 1-inch pic on an ipod screen. It's why I'm waiting to purchase the newest Radiohead record... (yes, I know it's available now as download, and they'll send you the record later...) I'll rip my own, thank you. Doc Last edited by doctorsteve; 03-07-2011 at 12:02 PM. |
