Default Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here SACD

Looks like we are finally going to see the Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here SACD after all these years. Interesting to see a major band re-issue an album on a format that has such a niche market. They must really trust their engineer as SACD is James' hi-rez format of choice. I'm very happy!

From A Fleeting Glimpse

Quote:
Wish You Were Here SACD We have received hundreds of emails over the years (Since 2005 in fact when we first broke the story of the possibility the WYWH SACD after having dinner with Pink Floyd's then Manager, who told AFG that at that time it was a 'very low priority'). Time has passed and we have been keeping a very careful ear to the ground about this release and can now tell you that it's finally on it's way. No date as yet, but be prepared for a BIG surprise when it finally does surface. Please don't email about this because we have told you all we can at this point.

Yeah I noticed a post on Friday at the Steve Hoffman forums from the guy that runs the Floyd Archives saying it was on its way.

Super exciting news to see a major SACD release...hopefully in 2011, lol.

Not to sound stupid, but what is an SACD? I am a Pink Floyd fan and am always on the look out for cd/dvd related items. Especially for WYWH. Best album (IMO).

SACD is a next-generation CD format featuring higher resolution technology called DSD (direct stream digital) and a more direct relationship between bits and sound that many audiophiles find superior to PCM. It also allowed multiple layer discs, featuring a CD layer, a 2-channel traditional stereo layer and a multichannel layer.

Wish You Were Here would be great.

The long wait is finally over, incredible news as many had given up hope it would ever be released. Begin the calls for Animals to be released on SACD.

I will most likely get this as well. You should get the Dark Side Of The Moon SACD, great channel seperation.

That hasn't caught on as much as SACD did, which is a shame. More to the point, I would characterize Blu-ray Audio as a next generation DVD-A format. DVD-A didn't catch on either.

I wouldn't break out the hats and hooters just yet. This title has been rumored for many years (since about 2001) and never materialized. Until I see a release date and see it on my shelf, I'll remain skeptical. Don't mean to rain on the parade, but just trying to put some perspective on the news.

I'll believe it when I have it in my hands. I don't even care about the high-resolution audio, I just wanted to buy the CD but thought it would be dumb after reading a remaster was "just around the corner."

That was over three years ago...

"but be prepared for a BIG surprise when it finally does surface"

And what does this mean? Perhaps the whole catalog in SACD or Even Blu-ray audio? Perhaps the whole catalog released on Blu? My mind is going all over the place with this one.

Right. The cover for the supposed SACD version was even featured in Storm Thorgerson's Pink Floyd book (the fourth version), which was released in 2007.
Actually, while I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, I don't really like these releases. They always manage to remix the entire album, which if you know the albums by heart, is completely jarring. Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds wasn't the same in its SACD release.

Hmm. To me that's selling Blu short. It's like saying Laser Disc was a next-generation LP format.

Yes, they are both optical-based media. Yes, they use the same basic technological philosophy and methods (a "laser" reading holes in a layered disc). But saying that Blu is a next-generation DVD-A? And comparing it's 'success' (when even Blu video is still within it's first year of general public acceptance) to a format that is not only past it's peak, but even AT it's peak, hadn't even the slightest FRACTION of recognition that Blu video has currently...

*Sigh* Insert Debbie Downer Trombone 'whaaant-whaaaaah' here... Sorry, they're great, but they ARE last generation. The focus needs to be on advancing the cause of Blu-Audio to replace a technology (or 'brand', if you like...) that has not succeeded. I'm not going to say failed, because I'm sure that could be argued against, but face it - 8-track was more 'successful'...

I'm as enthusiastic as you about it, but the public already regards music as downloadable iTunes songs and I don't see that changing no matter how successful BD becomes for movies.

I see your point, and I'd also guess that you have an extensive collection of physical media of many varieties. For at least the next 25 years, those still rooted in the physical media world will have a desire as consumers for physical media. But even my nephews, who have been raised in the world of digital cameras, cell phones, Netflix, and iTunes - still buy CD's, DVD's, and are just now getting into Blu-ray.

Physical media is not going to disappear, and as a recent television commercial highlights - newer/better technology has a habit of trumping old. As I see it - there is room for both newer technologies (downloads and physical in nature). With thousands of existing SACDs and DVD-As (but with only a lingering audience for the Brands), the companies that hold the rights for these products are not going to be relying solely on digital downloads to keep their cash flows healthy.

I'd say that part of the 'snobbery' that many people allege about Audiophilism is the inherent 'look what I've got' attitude that some have about their collections and equipment (and that's not MY accusation, by the way - I'm as guilty of that as anyone). That takes physical media. You can't point to a single hard drive sitting on a lonely shelf and be impressive. You need a massive Walnut shelf with thousands of plastic cases and paper sleeves to be King of your particular castle. (This particular point is anecdotal, but still just to illustrate the point that SACD still sells, versus the Audiophile clamoring for digital download of hi-def material).

I consider Downloads as disposable media, and feel that people will always want something they can hold onto... and rip to their latest ipod.

Sorry this rant has gotten so off-topic, but you just don't get the same experience with a download. I want that cover art with the fiery handshake, and I want it bigger than a 1-inch pic on an ipod screen. It's why I'm waiting to purchase the newest Radiohead record... (yes, I know it's available now as download, and they'll send you the record later...) I'll rip my own, thank you.
