Default Good Blu-ray for learning about Space, Solar System and Planets? 5 year old

What Blu-Rays are good for learning about the Universe, Space, other planets, etc.

My son is five and really likes watching Planet Earth, Life and I'm looking for other blu-ray's that are similar. I recently showed him this youtube video and he has been talkinga bout how tiny the moon and Earth are after.

The Universe is quality programming from History Channel.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-U...1015/#Overview

For movies, Contact, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and 2001 would be great, but especially the latter may go over his head, but still they're great, very ingelligent sci-fi/space films.

Also Roving Mars, although more specialized in its content.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I should have specified. I'm looking for more of the actual learning type stuff versus sci-fi movies. That History Channel The Unverise looks perfect and I see they sell first 3 seasons together then the rest individually. The Mars looks pretty interesting itself, I think have a Disney Imax one at home as well.

I like the History channel series Universe, but imho it is rather melodramatic. Sometimes on some episodes (like Death Stars, ep. 1 season 2) they make it sound like any minute we're going to be bombarded by a jet of death rays from a supernova. They also tell you the odds are something like a billion to one against that happening in our lifetimes, if not a trillion to one, but that's a ps that doesn't necessarily get into the minds of young ones when they watch the special effects of disaster.

My 9 year old daughter, to put it bluntly, doesn't like the show much for that reason, even though normally she loves science documentaries.

It's a bit outdated, and a bit over the heads of all but the most brilliant 5 year olds, but I'd go for Cosmos by Carl Sagan.

Just my 2 cents....As I say, I still like Universe and watch it sometimes.

NOVA produces the best documentaries, IMO. Although all of them are not about astronomy and are not on Blu-Ray, I would highly recommend visiting your local library and checking out a bunch of NOVA DVD's.

Your son would probably like Water Life (blu-ray 3 disc set) and The Blue Planet seas of life (it's on DVD not blu-ray) but it is amazing and has David attenborough to narrate! Also must have's are "Life in the Undergrowth" and "Microcosmos" These are the best nature programs available.

Sweet, thanks! The more the merrier. I've been shifting him as much as I can from cartoons of course some cartoons are fine but I'd rather he watch more educational stuff especially that he wants to be an astronaut.

And if you do decide to pull the trigger on getting History Channel's "The Universe", the cheapest place to get them is at Costco -- only $16.99 per season.

Wow, that is cheap! Thanks I just bought Season 1 on Amazon but I'll do costco after that. 705 minutes for the first season should take a while.

Well, I'd recomment the Science Channel series "How the Universe Works", but I see that it's not on disc at all. Not even DVD. Shame too, because it uses state of the art CG graphics in HD to show what's going on out there, and the visuals are stunning. Watching two planets collide is just jaw dropping. (That's how we got our moon, btw.)

Oh cool. I do have netflix, however I've already order season 1. Yeah, he reminds me pretty frequently that he wants to be an astronaut. I'll have to look on netflix for other stuff as well, didn't even think to

There's an old film from the 1980s called "For All Mankind" It's more about the moon, astronauts, etc. than the entire galaxy, but it's a fantastic documentary and would probably be great for your son.

Carl Sagans Cosmos series would be perfect!!! It is on DVD but don't let that dissuade you. This is what you need for him!

http://www.amazon.com/Cosmos-Carl-Sa...9657827&sr=8-2

Just look at the reviews....

Order it on netflix - from the library - or find a deal but get that set.

Do you think there's ANY chance of Cosmos making it to Blu-ray?
