Taiwan XXY (2007) - Taiwan

Lucía Puenzo's drama XXY (2007) is available in Taiwan, courtesy of BitWel:

http://dvd.jsdvd.com/product_info.php?products_id=25595
http://www.yesasia.com/us/xxy-blu-ra...0-en/info.html

Release date: 2011-03-10
Audio: Spanish
Subtitles: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese

(A word of warning seems to be in order: some of the previous BitWel releases turned out to be mere upscaled 720p material while others were mastered with incorrect aspect ratio - order on your own risk )

A fantastic film, indeed! I will, however, suggest that people take your warning very seriously, as BitWel are indeed upscaling films left and right.

Unless it is a direct port of an existing Japanese or U.S. release, approach BitWel products with an extra dose of suspicion.

While I don't own any BitWel discs to check myself I've read elsewhere they might also be (pointlessly) converting lossy DD and DTS tracks into lossless formats along with upscaling the video. As pro-b says, approach BitWel with extreme caution!

converting a lossy audio track to another audio track with the lossless format would make both audio tracks have the same quality. in this case, the lossless audio track can not be better than the original lossy audio track.

How to verify whether the lossless audio was converted from the lossy audio?

Wow, what a surprise to see this one out on Blu-ray!

The Pecadillo pictures (UK), also the Spanish Cameo release, are in Anamorphic 1.85:1 as far as I know. Film Movement have a reputation for non anamorphic/letterbox releases, so I guess that is why Amazo lists as 1.33:1 as it might be non anamorphic widescreen.

I ordered the DVD (Pecadillo) and it arrived last week, and I never expected this one to be released on Blu-ray. It is a nice surprise, and I wish I had seen this earlier as I would have held out for the Blu-ray. I don't mind buying DVDs at the present time, but hate it when a Blu-ray comes out a month or so later

Anyway, I will wait and see some reports before ordering as the price isn't that cheap either.

XXY, it was nominated for eight awards at the 2008 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards.
It deserves a better HD transfer on Blu-ray.

My experience with BitWel has been that they will port existing releases. If there are existing Blu-ray releases of the same title somewhere in the world, BitWel releases of the same movie will tend to be direct port with addition of subtitles (and possible re-encoding of audio and video to fit SL 25GB disc). If there isn't any existing Blu-ray releases of the same title, then they will upconvert existing DVD or broadcast master into Blu-ray.

1. by hardware, if there is the fbi or cia professional equipments, compare the two audio waveforms.
2. by software, compare both audio tracks' audio raw data to see whether they have the same data.

upconvert dvd 720x480 or 720x576 to 1920x1080 won't make video quality better. any video scaling would make video quality loss from 1% to 100% loss. 720 to 1920 (=720x2.67) , and 480 to 1080 (=480x2.25), it's possible to lose over 10% video quality.
converting 1920x1080 to 720x480, it causes 83% video quality loss.
so if convert 720x480 to 1920x1080, then convert it back to 720x480, the total video quality would lose 10% to 20%. any video scaling would only make
original video quality worse, it can not be better.
dvd format is 30i(60i), 30p, 25i(50i), 25p, if converting dvd to blu-ray, it gets 60p, 30p or 50p, 25p. to fit blu-ray standards, it should be 30i(60i) or 25i(50i). however if even field and odd fied not well processeed on dvd, then converting to 1920x1080 30i(60i) or 25i(50i) would make video terrible unless using 60p and 50p, however, the blu-ray standards can't support 60p and 50p.

Wow, lot of misinformation here. You need to read up a little more on what you are talking about.

the xxy dvd has heavy grain, it should make the dvd upscaling video quality totally unacceptable.

Bitwel seem to be releasing some nice films, and they are films I didn't expect to see on Blu-ray, and films I doubt other distributors will release on Blu-ray, so I'm interested to see if they have picked up the quality of their releases as well.
