Is it me, or does it seem inevitable that both formats will require HDCP DVI or HDMI? It's a shame, because all us early adopters with h-def tvs are the same people who will be looking to buy a hi-def disc player. Surely they need their players to be compatible for this group. People who don't have a hi-def tv probably aren't in any rush to bnuy a hi-def disc player. I wonder why no one has discussed connection regarding the players? I mean Sky has announced digital as the only conenction. Unless they're undecided. If HD-DVD launches with digital viedo outputs only, Sony should launch with component and make that one of the selling points/advantages of BR over HD.

I guess thatīs the deal. Studios are so afraid of analog copys, so its likely hd-dvd / blu-ray disc players will appear with digital hdcp protected signal
only. "nice" statement from Universal (according to www.area-dvd.de): they support hd-dvd in the first instance not beause of the better picture quality or higher capacity but rather because of the better copy protection...... //greets Phil |

sure, sometime... theyīll always find a way crack the protections. But most of the digital copy protections havenīt been cracked yet (hdcp / microsoft drm protected wmvīs / D-VHS D-Theater for example).
So if they donīt offer any analog output but only a digital HDCP protected output signal they can at least prevent that the average customer to create analog copys. So I think its unlikely theyīll offer players with analog output, but i donīt care too much cause my beamer offers HDMI HDCP an i donīt do copys but buy the movies i like ![]() |

If Blu-Ray is only watchable via hdmi, then I can't see the UK getting it any time soon. Only now are tvs getting hdmi in the Uk. Most models that would have had the connection in the USA has had it removed when the same tv was sold in the UK. Only 42"+ sets seem to have the sets in the Uk. With so few people with a hi-def hdmi set in the UK, a 2007 date or later would seem plausible. There's no point launching a format less than 1% can actually use, (without the having to purchase another tv). Best wait until more people have upgraded. Enthusiasts can just import a machine til then. Infact, it might make more sense to buy a USA machine anyway as hi-def discs are likely to released far earlier and cheaper than in the UK, (using dvd as a reference). Also, if regional coding is stronger, multi-region players may be hugely expensive.

I wonder what is going on with respect to HDCP. etc.
I mean, what consumer machine out there will compress DVI in real time? Perhaps this is a clue that BD may have on board MPEG2 encoding for HD? Or there is the expectation that such a device will exist in the 'near term'...? If nobody can record DVI, there is little reason to protect it. If the BD can record unscrambled DVI, it would be awesome ![]() Cheers! |

As long as the copy protection is software...
Then it will always be crackable... |
