I really hope people don't freak out when they find out it is mpeg-2.
It was probably done as far back as 2006 imo.
The HK disc actually looks very film-like, and is an accurate representation of the inherent look of the film imo.
lots of very dark scenes and tons of gritty grain in all its glory.
not saying it could not have maybe been even better with a better encode, but it is certainly not a disaster by any means.
I think most people who actually know what the film should look like will be pleased overall with this release.
the daylight scenes are a nice upgrade from the dvd, and the film overall definitely benefits from the 1080p bump.

Yep, the HK version is a fine effort. VERY different from the R1 20th Anniversary DVD though, with a much cleaner print and different colour timing throughout the movie. It's obvious that the disc was intended for the North American market as well, because it's got the usual FBI logo at the start.

So....are we getting a re-encode with all the DVD extras too? Or will Fox have the brass balls to release this bare bones version which is already several years old?

Is there any speculation yet of which Platoon blu-ray version (UK Fox, HK Deltamac, USA MGM) will have the best video/audio quality? Is there a good chance that one of these versions will be superior?

I am soooo looking forward to this release and it is the only Vietnam film which brings back memories (some sad - especially the film score) for me as a Vietnam War Veteran!

Super news!!!

Just so you know I really, really hate Oliver Stone. I pee standing up. I go four-wheeling. Everyone calls me 'Butch', and I really hate Oliver Stone.

Way too subtle for people stupid enough to love Stone's movies and hate Stone, I guess!

I hate him as well with a passion. He's so full of himself I am betting someone wipes his butt for him after he takes a dump.

I literally can't count the amount of times I've said "How can insert name of movie get released on blu ray when Platoon still hasn't?" Day one purchase and viewing.

Just watched Platoon on DVD last weekend. Still a powerful movie for a variety of reasons. I hope it gets proper treatment on blu. A definite buy.
