DVD vs Blu Ray HTiB - Blu-ray Forum

So I'm currently looking for a Home Theater in a box and I've come across a couple of good deals. One that I like is the Samsung HT C653W because the speakers are wireless, but it isn't a Blu Ray player it comes with, it comes with an "upscaling" DVD player instead. I have a PS3 and run my Blu Ray's off there so I'm not concerned about the player unless for some reason the system wouldn't be able to handle audio from Blu Ray's.

There is a similar one from LG that is on sale for the same price, it comes with a blu ray but the speakers are wired.

Any advice on which one to get would be helpful.

If you care about HD audio formats then the LG is your choise, you can conect the PS3 though a optical cable on both, neither acept HDMI inputs so HD sound is a no go for the samsung. The LG can produce HD audio cause it has the bluray player.
Another thing either one has limited conectivity, I'll suggest you go with separated receiver and buy a HTB speakers, you can get a better SQ and a lot of more.

You could spend just a tad bit more and NOT throw your money away on a low-quality system.

The Onkyo is very highly rated and comes with a REAL receiver (AVR) that allows you to listen to HD audio. It's really a no-brainer.

I am totally with the Onkyo suggestion , grab an onkyo HT-3300 and set yourself up with a standalone blu-ray player and you'll experience a somehow real HT

Thanks, I appreciate the advice on the Onkyo. However, my budget and current living room set up is more applicable to the two I originally posted. If you have advice on those two in particular, it would be helpful...anything else - thanks, but no thanks for now.

Also, I'm in Canada and I've searched around on Best Buy, Future Shop, and Wal Mart and none of them seem to have that system.

Everyone is right though. I just bought a good standalone player and will soon get teh HTIB Onkyo system. It might be a bit, but I can wait. I just wish I had a bigger TV. To the return center!

(in this case I'm itching for a projector)

Bob, I understand all too well being on a budget. I recently went through a similar situation and ended up buying the Onkyo. Trust me, with a little leg work you can find that one closer to your budget. I'm not sure how much the Samsung is, but we're only talking a $70 difference between an ok system and a better, upgradeable system that Ricshoe and some of the other of us recommend. The Onkyo is at least something you can build up from, I'm not so sure about the one's you are looking at.

Visions has them. $448.00 is pretty good for a decent starter system like that.

Not when you can get a much better system that's upgradeable, has full-range speakers, allows for HDMI switching and HD audio, for $80 less.

Yeah that onkyo is a not brainer, it'll give you a taste of what a real HT is all about, plus you don't need a player cause the PS3 will do everything, you can conect your cable box, wii, regular DVD player, anything you want. Plus if you ever want to upgrade to a 3D tv you are all set with this onkyo.

The $448 is for the Onkyo HTS 3300, which is what he said he couldn’t find. The one in your link, Onkyo HTS 5300, is $548. We’re in Canada, and it’s a bit pricier up here.

Sorry. I thought you were referring to the Samsung/LG system(s). I agree, the 3300 would also be a good choice.

Wow, that's quite a price jump for you guys up north. Assume you can't simply order from some place like Vanns or Shoponkyo.com and get the same price as we do in the States (currency adjusted, of course)?

I’m not sure about what fees he’d have to pay for cross-border shopping, and don’t know if it’d be worth it in the end. I can’t advise regarding that.
My advice would be to completely avoid the LG, Samsung and any other similar systems and save just a lil bit more until the Onkyo is achievable.
