Wall-E is the only other CG animated film I can think of that is unique. The animation in Rango is above and beyond anything else I have ever seen, and ILM should bring home lots of little statues this/next year for Rango. Today I saw it with 2 friends, and they both liked it very much. I caught a lot more great lines, and because I was sitting closer to the screen, I could make out all the subtle details! It truly is a sight to behold!!!! Mind-blowing job! First day purchase whenever it is released on BD! ![]() |

I loved it!
![]() [Show spoiler] Really, really liked this movie. It was Chinatown, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Man With No Name trilogy all rolled into one. Just an awesome time at the movies, and one that I can't absolutely wait to put in my blu-ray collection! ![]() 5/5 ![]() |

The wife and I are going to see this today. Hopefully it's as good as everyone is saying.
Update: Just got back. It wasn't my cup 'o tea. I just couldn't get into it. Great production value for sure but it just wasn't that interesting. I actually enjoyed Tangled a lot more. I did like [Show spoiler] .

So, I've just seen the film for the fourth time and I love it. I really like the piece of music called "Finale" by Danny Elfman that was used when
[Show spoiler] I think it's a powerful piece of music. It was also used in the 2007 film The Kingdom. |

Does this film have any new admirers now that it's been released on DVD and Blu-ray?
I must say that not only did I thoroughly enjoy the film, but the quality of the Blu-ray is absolutely wonderful. ![]() |

I think Rango is a brilliant movie! The story does take time to develop, but the characters in the movie were well thought out, and the story was very thorough (love the Fear and Loathing ode!), and that's one movie I've caught wanting to watch more than most movies! The humor was very quirky and it worked!

Funny that this thread was brought back... A while back, I posted on the "movies you don't understand why people love them" thread, and I mentioned Rango as being one of those movies for me.
It's... kind of odd to describe it. If I were to look at it objectively, Rango truly is a good movie, great even. The characterization is super strong, the CG is stunningly gorgeous, and the action pieces are some of the best ever put in an animated film (seriously that bat chase while Ride of the Valkyries plays through kazoos and banjos is super epic). Yet, if I were to look at it as both a movie fan and an animated film fan, the film is very low in my favorite animated movies least. Like I said, it is kind of hard to explain it since it does have some great elements. For me it is the story and the pacing of it. Simply put, it moves at a very slow pace. It's not that I don't like movies that take their time setting the story and characters, but in Rango at times we seem to be stuck on the same scene for so long, and most of the time it is to present the quirky traits of the characters, like the female lizard that freezes every once in a while. And speaking of quirk, the characters also present themselves as a problem in the narrative. The film focuses so much on their quirks that it forgets to make them easy to relate to or even pay attention to them beyond their quirks. Like, one of the characters has a bow stuck to his eye. All I could do is focus on his eye than on what he was saying. The same holds true for a lot of the characters. Finally, the story has been played out in other movies before. What astounded me was how the movie was hailed as one of the most innovative movies of 2011, yet its story is at times very by the numbers. I get that for some the movie still worked regardless of how cliche it all seemed, but for me, I couldn't get pass the story. I would forgive a cliche story if the execution was enthralling and its characters great, but Rango lacks those qualities for me. In other words, this is the definition of a "your mileage may vary" movie. Some I bet will love it to death, while others will despise me. Me, I can still the good qualities and even recommend a viewing since it seems to speak to people on so many different levels. It just isn't my kind of movie. |
