And again, the character design being grotesque, even the kids in 'The Ant Bully' were ugly.. it's a design decision, take it or leave it.

The other thing I noted that even amongst the action set pieces the dialogue is fast and furious, alot of which would be missed by youngster's, the adults I saw this with thought the script was by far on the cleverest things about the film. This film took alot of chances and I think that it (for the most part) suceeded.
Even while watching it, I was very aware of how many, and rapid fire all the snarky remarks were. I sat there thinking "You'd need to see this 2-3 times to catch all the jokes". Great dialogue.

Yeah, that's what I love about this film. It's so refreshing!
Wall-E is the only other CG animated film I can think of that is unique.

The animation in Rango is above and beyond anything else I have ever seen, and ILM should bring home lots of little statues this/next year for Rango.

Today I saw it with 2 friends, and they both liked it very much.
I caught a lot more great lines, and because I was sitting closer to the screen, I could make out all the subtle details!

It truly is a sight to behold!!!! Mind-blowing job!

First day purchase whenever it is released on BD!

I loved it! It was so good, and so different for a family movie in this day in age. It was smart, funny, action packed, and bizarre as hell. It was just really excellent filmmaking with a great voice cast.
[Show spoiler]Plus, any movie family movie with a Hunter S. Thompson cameo is very much OK in my book! Also, loved that the Spirit of the West was Clint Eastwood's Blondie! Timothy Olyphant was dead on with the voice! I couldn't believe it wasn't eastwood!
Really, really liked this movie. It was Chinatown, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Man With No Name trilogy all rolled into one. Just an awesome time at the movies, and one that I can't absolutely wait to put in my blu-ray collection!

5/5

Default Rango........sucks!!!

Sorry, this was a HUUUUUGE letdown!! After all the positive reviews for this movie I was expecting so much more. The computer animation done by ILM is fantastic. However the story is just so uninteresting.

Sorry you didn't like it, I thought it was pretty entertaining. The story may be tired and cliche, but it pays homage to westerns. Go Vols! I used to live off Hwy 153 and went to Chatt State, lol

The wife and I are going to see this today. Hopefully it's as good as everyone is saying.

Update: Just got back. It wasn't my cup 'o tea. I just couldn't get into it. Great production value for sure but it just wasn't that interesting. I actually enjoyed Tangled a lot more. I did like
[Show spoiler]the Clint Eastwood and Fear/Loathing in Las Vegas parts though.

So, I've just seen the film for the fourth time and I love it. I really like the piece of music called "Finale" by Danny Elfman that was used when
[Show spoiler]Rango is kicked out of town by Rattlesnake Jake and he decides to end it and cross the busy road.
I think it's a powerful piece of music. It was also used in the 2007 film The Kingdom.

Does this film have any new admirers now that it's been released on DVD and Blu-ray?

I must say that not only did I thoroughly enjoy the film, but the quality of the Blu-ray is absolutely wonderful.

Saw this in the theater and I have to admit while the CGI was impressive the story is what really killed it for me. I found it rather uninteresting and boring.

I think Rango is a brilliant movie! The story does take time to develop, but the characters in the movie were well thought out, and the story was very thorough (love the Fear and Loathing ode!), and that's one movie I've caught wanting to watch more than most movies! The humor was very quirky and it worked!

Funny that this thread was brought back... A while back, I posted on the "movies you don't understand why people love them" thread, and I mentioned Rango as being one of those movies for me.

It's... kind of odd to describe it. If I were to look at it objectively, Rango truly is a good movie, great even. The characterization is super strong, the CG is stunningly gorgeous, and the action pieces are some of the best ever put in an animated film (seriously that bat chase while Ride of the Valkyries plays through kazoos and banjos is super epic).

Yet, if I were to look at it as both a movie fan and an animated film fan, the film is very low in my favorite animated movies least. Like I said, it is kind of hard to explain it since it does have some great elements. For me it is the story and the pacing of it. Simply put, it moves at a very slow pace. It's not that I don't like movies that take their time setting the story and characters, but in Rango at times we seem to be stuck on the same scene for so long, and most of the time it is to present the quirky traits of the characters, like the female lizard that freezes every once in a while.

And speaking of quirk, the characters also present themselves as a problem in the narrative. The film focuses so much on their quirks that it forgets to make them easy to relate to or even pay attention to them beyond their quirks. Like, one of the characters has a bow stuck to his eye. All I could do is focus on his eye than on what he was saying. The same holds true for a lot of the characters.

Finally, the story has been played out in other movies before. What astounded me was how the movie was hailed as one of the most innovative movies of 2011, yet its story is at times very by the numbers. I get that for some the movie still worked regardless of how cliche it all seemed, but for me, I couldn't get pass the story. I would forgive a cliche story if the execution was enthralling and its characters great, but Rango lacks those qualities for me.

In other words, this is the definition of a "your mileage may vary" movie. Some I bet will love it to death, while others will despise me. Me, I can still the good qualities and even recommend a viewing since it seems to speak to people on so many different levels. It just isn't my kind of movie.
