Hey everyone. I just signed up for this website because I am interested in buying a standalone blu ray player. I was thinking of going with HD-DVD but i changed my mind after looking at the list of companies supporting blu ray. The problem is I want a blu ray player that i can buy for the same price as an HD-DVD player. When are the best deals for players besides boxing day sales?

i know you said you wanted a standalone but to be honest the best value for quality is the ps3... i know its a "gaming system" but it makes system updates a snap with its wireless capability, you can buy the ps3 remote so you dont have to keep using the controller to play movies, it has the nicest look (in my opinion) and if ever you feel like it or if you have kids, neices, nephews or wtv you can always pick them up a game for them to play when they come over

best thing is that its under 400

Welcome to the blu side! I use the PS3 as my blu-ray player and couldn't be happier. It's profile 1.1 now with the latest firmware update so it does PiP. It's also the fastest loading blu-ray player out there. That said, if you want a standalone, you'll find plenty to choose from. Pick the manufacturer of your choice.

Most importantly, enjoy those 1080p visuals with lossless audio!

The least expensive BD players would be the Samsung BDP-1400, which can be had as low as $279 if you shop around, or the Sony S300, which is about $299. Personally I would recommend the PS3 40GB for $399, it just gives you so much stuff for the price.

Do the S300 if you want entry level price. Not as many issues as the Samsungs right now.

If you don't care about having the picture in picture functionality, definitely go with the Sony S300. And get it at Best Buy. They have a 5 instant movies and 5 mail-in (for a total of 10 to remove any confusion) offer right now on the purchase of any stand-alone blu-ray player, so that makes the player a great deal when you factor in the cost of each movie into your purchase price. If you're looking for the latest player with all the functionality at a good price, though, the Panasonic BD30 is definitely the way to go.

Also be sure to check out the Hot Deals forum to make sure there's not a coupon or two that you may be able to use as well.

Finally, I'm sure that you're looking at HD DVD player pricing and wanting to compare, but just make sure you do an "apples to apples" comparison. Many of the low-price HD DVD players only output on 1080i, while ALL Blu-ray players output at 1080p. That may not be a big deal to you now, but down the road a bigger HDTV that can accept that 1080p input will make a huge difference.

Again, best of luck, and welcome to the Blu family!
