The Name of the Rose Blu-ray Review

Set for an August 2, 2011 release date.

From The Digital Bits:

The Name of the Rose will include commentary by director Jean-Jacques Annaud (in separate English and French tracks), The Abbey Crimes and Photo Video Journey featurettes, and the trailer.

I LOVE this film.

Hopefully we will get English subs for the French commentary this time, and I really hope we also get the 2-hour documentary on the second DVD of the Warner EU SE DVD sets, I have always wanted to see it, but I never got round to doing more than renting the R1 DVD.

Unless things change, I may hold off on the USA release and hope that somewhere in the EU gets all the extras, or perhaps I will bundle the BD with the second DVD...

WOW I totally would not have guessed this one but I am definately onboard. I saw this movie years ago and it is a fantastic mystery film (loosely based on a true story so they say)

This film is SPECTACULAR! What a thriller!

The DVD's quality was not very good...I hope they give it a nice polishing and clean up for the Blu.

If you haven't seen it, you're missing out

PS: Christian Slater is pretty good in it too...one of his first (if not "the") films.

Edit: OH YEAH! I have actually BEEN to the monastery in Germany where this was filmed. I got to see some of the wine barrels...no pigs though LOL

The Amazon page has an image of the back of the Blu, which says "Commentary ... in Both English and French with Subtitles"

No one is prepared for the Spanish Inquisition

Ah, that scene with Christian Slater and Valentiana Vargas lived long in my young teenage memory

Cracking movie through and through. Never got the DVD, haven't owned this since VHS shamefully - will be a pleasant addition to the collection

I haven't seen this movie since it's initial theatrical release - heard that the commentary track is entertaining in that the director goes on about actor F. Murray Abraham basically acting like a prima donna

Yes, the English commentary is something to behold indeed. A huge gaffe on all the Warner SE DVD sets worldwide was that Warner forgot to include English subtitles for Annaud's French commentary track, but it seems they have been added to the US BD, so it will be nice to finally hear that one, which is said by some to be more informative than the English one, which is quite heavily anecdotal, as I remember.

I am considering hinting down one of Warner's PAL SE 2 DVD sets, as they come with a two-hour documentary that the US editions have never had. The only issue is, not all of the EU editions have English subtitles for this second documentary (which seems to be mostly in French), the Benelux edition (seemingly impossible to find) appears to have them, but according to DVDBeaver, the French one does not, and according to DVDCompare, the Spanish one does, so that may be the one I hunt down.

I really wish WB could have included this documentary on the US BD.

Aspect ratio: 1.77:1
Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1

When companies do this crap they should get fined! Forget it.

That is interesting. However, the comparison shots at DVDBeaver all appear to be at the same ratio, or so close that I cannot tell the difference. He lists the DVD's as being at the original aspect ratio of 1.85/1 but does not list the aspect ratio of the blu ray (which is a bit odd).

They open up the matte of the 1.85:1 movies to 1.77:1, standard Warner Bros practice.
