Default Why do you think Disney is re-releasing their Pixar movies.?

I dont know why they would do this when they already are on blu-ray. What do you think?

they're just adding dvds and crap like that.
that's all it is.
there are tons of re-releases happening every week where new combo releases are being created from the old releases.

To make more money. Period, a re-release brings these titles back to the front of all retailers.

I prefer combo packs over just blu. I purposely haven't bought Ratatouille, after noticing this re-release trend. If there's me, there's hundreds/thousands others, that's enough to make a good chunk of change. Disney just wants everything combo packs. I don't know why this throws everyone to a frenzy all the time.

Combo packs, and slipcovers to make the guys that love them buy the movie again (or finally buy it). Also they're making the covers consistent, which kind of bothers my OCD (thankfully not enough to buy them again) because that's how the new ones will look like.

New SKU = more retail exposure. At a time when they're looking to support a new theatrical release.

Not rocket science.

The real golden cow is Finding Nemo. Release that sucker on BD and they'll generate big bucks.

Aren't some of the Pixar re-releases the same SKU though?
Simply re-packaged with the new branding/cover art, a dvd tossed in and potentially the DC removed?

I have all the Pixar titles on BD so I have no desire of picking up the same movie with a DVD included. I honestly have little use for the DVDs included with BDs but I do hold onto the DVDs included with family/kids titles because I am going to get a SUV in the next couple years and it may only come with a DVD player.

Not if you have any understanding of sales and marketing. Especially in a business like BD, which if you look at the sales stats is a hit-driven business. Only the top 10 titles really sell any volume, so it's important to get the attention of retailers to push your titles.

The same thing happens in the publishing industry: publishers will re-issue old classics with new cover art. Why? It gets attention and is perceived as a new publication. Then sometimes, after years of new cover art, they'll come out with an addition restoring the original cover art, which now seems very classy and unique.

Also, the first rule of sales is "overcoming objections". Right now, in spite of decreasing player prices and its success so far, there are still millions of people without BD players. Selling combo packs is a way for people to "ease in" to the market. They don't have to invest in DVD-only packages, which they feel will be obsolete, but they don't have to buy a BD player "right now". So they buy the combo package knowing it supports both their current as well as their future equipment. Or it gives them the ability to watch on their BD player as well as their computer or older system in the kids room. Etc.

Same here, I only have 1 HDTV/Blu-ray player, so if I can, I try to get the combo packs so I can still have the option of watching the DVD in another room. I've been waiting for Pixar to re-release Cars, Ratatouille, and WALL-E, so I am glad we're getting these 3 as combo packs soon.

However, I can see how it would get annoying to people who weren't interested in the combo packs and were waiting for Finding Nemo.

I give my DVDs to my cousins, but they're mostly replacements for their older discs (the younger one still doesn't know how to treat them, or is just learning now), since my aunt gets them pretty much every Disney movie.

I think they're doing it just to piss people off...

[Show spoiler]This is one of those topics that I never understood why it bothered so many people to see a re-release of a film. If you already own it and they haven't done anything to the film itself, then why does it bother you to see the movie in a new package? My point is that I'm not going to care if there is a re-release of a film I like unless it has:

1. been remastered, cleaned up, or restored.
2. possibly if it has a brand spanking new arsenal of previously unseen features.
3. possibly if it comes in a new set pack with other films I haven't previously owned.

If they repackage it only to include a DVD copy or a digital copy and slap a new cover on it saying that it's the "Ten Year Anniversary release", then I couldn't give a rats @$$ since I already own the flippin' film. And if I see it in the store, I'll just look over it. That's all.

You just hit the nail right there and answer your own question. I suspect a lot of people are more into collecting art covers then movies themselves and so there is the anger many feel about a re-release with a new covert. They just have to get it in their mind. Look at all the crazy stuff about slip covers or steelbooks or digibooks. I suspect quite a many people are more into collecting then interest in the actual movie, watching it is just second to collecting. As oppose to me and others where it's about the movies and and not about the collectibles.

Indeed, unless they've improved the PQ and SQ I have zero interest, I also don't get bothered by seeing them on the shelf at a store.

I don't care bout slip covers either, but some people like stuff like that.

Nothing stupid maintaining a multi-billion dollar Corp like Disney/Pixar. Gotta keep the shareholders happy.
