NEIL YOUNG TO RELEASE LIVE ALBUM, ENTITLED A TREASURE ON REPRISE RECORDS

RENOWNED ROCKER UNEARTHS LIVE COUNTRY ALBUM RECORDED WITH LEGENDARY BAND, THE INTERNATIONAL HARVESTERS, WHILE ON TOUR IN THE U.S. IN 1984-1985

The 12-track live album A Treasure includes songs recorded during Young’s 1984-1985 U.S. tour and contains five previously unreleased songs. Among those, “Grey Riders” will be the first track serviced to radio. A Treasure features Young’s onstage work with some of the greatest artists in the history of country music, including the late, great Ben Keith on steel and slide guitar and Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle, along with living legends Spooner Oldham and Hargus “Pig” Robbins on piano, Tim Drummond and Joe Allen on bass, and Karl Himmel on drums, among many others. A Treasure is Young’s first release since last year’s Grammy- and Juno Award-winning album, Le Noise.

[...]

A Treasure will be released in several formats, including standard CD, vinyl, digital download with and without videos, and as a deluxe CD/Blu-Ray package. The Blu-Ray version will feature a curated selection of video that lends context and imagistic power to the tracks. “I like to look at these old live videos and listen to what I think are the best versions of these songs,” Young says. “It’s fun to see what we looked like when we were playing it then.”

Excellent! Has all the earmarks of a great release. I'd prefer Archives Vol. 2 though.

I skipped Le Noise, as the album didn't resonate with me, but this OTOH has me very intrigued.

I bought Le Noise on Cd and the jury is still out on whether i like it or not .

Im quite excited for this new offering because i loved when Neil was playing with the IH and still remember fondly the time he played with them on Austin City Limits .

Ditto. I'm more a fan of Neil's country style than his progressive rock experimentation.

Not yet. Apparently, it will be #9 in the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, but at this time the plan is not to include it with the third volume of The Archives. Ben Keith gave A Treasure its title.

Nice, I like it a CD is included with the Blu-ray. Being able to play it on all my systems and in the car is the way it should be done.

Is the Blu Ray going to be a Blu Ray Audio disc (like Tom Petty or Rush) or is it just going to have a few videos? I cannot tell from any of the descriptions online.

Finally on Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004YJMQQE/
I've added a database suggestion. Will an administrator please approve and add price tracking?

It's an album, that's all I know for sure. But the music may be accompanied with film.

I purchased the CD+Blu Ray combo last week. The performances are great.

But as far as the Blu Ray goes, one needs to go in with the right expections.

The visual performance component (which is there for a subset of tracks) is based on the best video that they could find to sync up with an audio performance, which includes a TV performance, super8 sources, audience bootleg video and and internet sources (quality ranges from DVD quality to poor VHS/Youtube quality). They are often from difference performances, so who you see playing will not always match who is actually playing, and of course are not always in sync.

As for the sound quality, it's perfectly fine, but as Neil says in the visual "tech notes":

"Even though Blu Ray quality sound is better on this version it isn't. Because we didn't use good sound in the first place"

So, a nice archival project, but it will be YMMV depending on what you're looking for. Where I picked up the combo it was about twice the price of the CD, which I think is argueably too high a premium in this case.

I guess the interesting thing is that even though the content/project doesn't really require it, Neil has now moved over to Blu Ray instread of DVD.

I am so so pleased to read that the Audio portion is up to par, and for that reason alone I will purchase this.

Interesting thought. This album would have sounded the same on DVD-Video, but Le Noise and Archive Volume 1 will not.

This particular project could have been fit on DVD, so I guess Neil Young has moved all his video stuff to Blu-ray. I would much rather have had Harvest on Blu-ray than this release.

I read on another forum the origianal recording may have used a 16-bit PCM recorder. I don't think anyone should expect this will sound any better than the CD, so unless someone really wants to see some of the archival video footage, the standalone CD may be a better bet at half the price.
