Default The Movie Recommendation Thread

In this thread, you can ask and recommend movies to fellow blu-ray members.

If you're looking for a certain movie, it would be best if you make your description more specific so that members could give you closer results to what you're looking for. It would also help if you mention similar movies that you liked.

I'll start:

I'm looking for a great romantic-comedy (preferably a feel-good one, but if it's depressing or something, that's fine). I also prefer a lesser-known one. It doesn't matter if it's English or not.

Some of my favorite rom-coms are:
(500) Days of Summer
Almost Famous
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Chungking Express
Edward Scissorhands
Enchanted
Lars and the Real Girl
Lost in Translation
Me and You and Everyone We Know
My Sassy Girl
Rushmore
Stranger Than Fiction
The Girl Next Door
The Princess Bride

So anything similar to any of those would be great.

Have you seen the French movie Amelie? I'd definitely suggest that one. I got the 'region A' canadian blu-ray from Ebay and it's excellent! (be sure to go for the newest release though)

If you don't mind romantic horror, check out the Swedish movie Let the Right One In - it's also a better film than it's US remake Let Me In.

I've got Amelie on my DVR and I'm really looking forward to seeing it. Jeunet has this interesting style that I like.

I've seen both movies and I love them. I already got both in my blu-ray collection. But they're not exactly rom-coms...

Thanks for your recommendations. If you have any others, go ahead and shoot.

Recently saw these.

Recommended:
"Black Swan" (surreal drama/thriller, remined me a bit of "Fight Club")
"The Fog" Original (classy John Carpenter ghost story horror flick)
"Memories of Murder" (dark gritty crime drama, similar to "Zodiac." Korean film)
"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (adventurous post-apocalypse sci-fi anime. Japanese film)
"Pleseantville" (light-hearted high-concept comedy)
"Stand by Me" (coming-of-age drama)
"Tangled" (Disney fantasy musical comedy)

Not Recommended:
"Ernest Goes to Camp" (slapstick comedy; didn't really make me laugh that much)
"Eat Pray Love" (rom-com, hated the character and story)
"Harvey" Remake (light-hearted comedy; watch the original with Jimmy Stewart instead)
"Kull the Conquerer" (sword-and-sorcery fantasy. Watch "Conan the Barbarian" instead)
"Skyline" (bad alien-invasion sci-fi. On the same level as "Dragon Wars." Recommend "Indepdence Day" instead)

Questionable Recommendation:
"The American" (spy thriller, slow as hell, but looks nice)
"Ernest Goes to Jail" (slapstick comedy; pretty absurd, but I've always been a fan)

I probably should have started by addressing your search for recommendations.

I'm not that big into rom-coms, but there's a few that stick out to me. "Pleseantville" is one; maybe not terribly big on romance, but it's one cool concept that makes for a pretty interesting and entertaining story, and would recommend it to everybody. "Roman Holiday" is another favorite of mine (Audrey Hepburn, ftw! ). I remember liking "Pretty Woman" as well, but haven't had a big urge to re-watch it; it'd be worth a rent.

Nah, it's cool. Our main objective here is to share movies with each other. It doesn't matter which way you do it.

Already saw Pleasantville (it's one of my faves), haven't seen Roman Holiday, and I remember watching Pretty Woman, but that was way back when I was a kid! I may have to check that one out again. Thanks, Al!

I second these recommendations. Great movies.

You can't get it on blu-ray yet, but even on dvd or vhs (for those with a Blu-ray/VHS combo player), nothing tops Cabin Boy!!

This was David Letterman's big break, and the world should hang its head that the movie only grossed about 3 million at the box office.

I know it's in limited release, but if you guys get a chance to see the film Win Win it is amazing.

Here is the IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1606392/

It is about a family who is going through some hard times and then gets into a little trouble. I know that sounds lame, but it is a really heartwarming story and I think the best movie I've seen this year so far.
