Default Public Perception of PS3: Cheap Blu-ray Player or Expensive Game Console?

This is an important question to consider. What do you honestly think is the public perception of the PS3 - a cheap Blu-ray player or an expensive gaming console? If we want our side to progress, it's important to look at it critically.

Right now, its mostly considered an expensive game console to the masses. Once xmas 07 arrives, you can be sure that the blu-ray feature will be put as a huge feature of the system, and of course a ton of amazing games will be out as well. Most people have no clue how capable the system is, but it will very well known when the time to strike arrives.

This is my first post FYI, but I think it is an honest combination of both. I had to have it for both aspects. The system is basically a whole media center, gaming system, and so far the best bluray player on the market. I think a lot of the quality of bluray playback has to do with the advanced cell processors and high quality graphics card it is using. I just watched The Covenant today and I was amazed at the quality that some of the scenes showed, the rain, darkness, special effects were absolutely awesome.

I think its a cheap mutimedia/entertainment center. For everything that the PS3 offers, the price is very reasonable. I have only heard ppl talk about it being expensive when they think "gaming console". When you look at everything it has to offer as a whole is when it makes more sense to your average Joe. Besides, the 360 with the hd dvd player upgrade is the same price and doesnt have all the features the ps3 has.

I have it for both aspects. Sony needs to be doing more marketing and damage control than they are. I was considering an XBox 360 for Gears of War. If you add in a 20gb hard drive, wireless controller, WiFi adapter, HD-DVD drive you are almost at $700 for less Hard Drive space etc. than the PS3. Granted, not everyone needs all that but its an important distinction that the masses should be seeing in commericals and such.

Is the PS/3 expensive to gamers? Yes.
Will the Playstation community buy it? Yes.
Will they use it as a BD player? Yes.

Are other people reading in A/V mags and A/V sites about the PS/3? Yes.
Will they buy it as an inexpensive BD player? Yes.

It's all good.

at BB this past weekend, i heard a salesman selling the sony player. he then stated in the same sentence that if they wanted to save some money, they can get a ps3 (which they had four of at the time not including the one under my arm... note, i was back later in the day and all four were gone) and have a game console as well

Sure, but the court of public opinion is not to be ignored. I look at the PS3 and BluRay like politics. Does everyone carefully evaluate a candidate based on how their policy will affect their life and further their own views? No, the "negative buzz tide" where the public and media latch on to certain negative facts or distorted facts and blow it out of proportion loses elections.

I have several friends with the XBox 360, which is a fine gaming console to be sure. They gripe about the cost of the PS3, yet I look at their amazing collection of peripherials and think "Man, you are complaining about $499 when you've got over $1000 worth of junk here just to get comparable capabilities". Public opinion matters as much as the facts, sadly. As long as titles like virtua fighter 5 and Lair and Final Fantasy XIII are as good as they look, there will be no problem for the PS3. As one journalist put it "as soon as the first fantastic game is out, all will be forgiven".

Yep.

And unless you think there is a chance that game won't ever come, it is pretty silly to be concerned. It's all a matter of when, not if, the PS/3 explodes from the 2 million sales point (with probably 1.5 million more guaranteed in the launch window in Europe).

A followup:

The suggested "killer-app" for the Euro launch? MotorStorm

The demo is amazing.

I think the PUBLIC see it as an expensive game console. I personally think it's both. I ended up buying a seconds PS3 to replace my last DVD player so I could watch all my movies (500+DVD/40 BD) on either TV that I own.

I too bought it for both, but i would say the general public sees it as a game console. if anything, mostly becuase of the name recognition.

i have been talking up the PS3 to my family since last Febuary, and I think most of the time they thought i was just rambling about video games again.

only when i actually showed them the Bluray discs in action, did they finally act impressed and surprised at the quality.

so i'm making it a point now to show everyone that I possibly can a BRD running on my PS3 whenever I get a chance.

It would nice to see a unit or two hooked up in stores like BestBuy & Circuit City displaying it's BRD capabilities. In the 'player/tv' section too, not just in the games section.

I got one because its an inexpensive BD player... Sony definately needs to do better marketing... Word of mouth is great, but they need to do better with their marketing to fully tap this market

While most of us on this blog got it for the Blu-Ray aspect - public views it as expensive game console - hands down. Not enough people are on the High Def home video band wagon yet - gamers rule the day.

As for a killer game - I don't see one on the horizon to bring in the masses...I love MGS4, but it is a 'niche' game that not everyone gets like a Halo or something.

Lets hope the next killzone will rock. Heavenly Sword may turn out to be a system seller also.

I guess we need to wait and see.
