Default Movie Theater or Home Theater?

Okay, Ive given up on ever going to the Movie Theater again.

I've just watched both War and Rush Hour 3 on Blu-Ray... neither of which I had seen in the Movie Theater. With 7.1 uncompressed and DTS-HD Master Audio pumping in my home set-up. Watching it on a calibrated 1080p 42" Monitor, and sitting in my easy chair with my patented ass groove. I see no reason to ever go to the Movie Theater again.

At home, I can tailor my movie watching experience. It's a joy that is unparalleled for a movie-aholic.

At the movie theater, my feet stick to the floor, I'm jostling for elbow room. There is ALWAYS someone talking through the whole damn movie. 50 people in front of me feel the need to text message during the movie, and all I see are these blazing white LCD phone screens in front of me, blinding me to the movie. Not to mention the picture is seldom in pristine focus, and the sound sucks... And that's if I pay the extra to go to the "good" movie theater. Don't even get me started on the cheap theater.

On Blu-Ray, I'm not subjected to 5 minutes of car commercials and HMV promotions. I can skip through the Previews if I want. I always have the best seat in the house. I can invite as many people to watch the movie with me as I want... at no extra cost. I can eat and drink what I want. Is there any down-side?

With the advent of HD movies in the home, will this spell the end of the Movie going experience? I was debating heading out to see AVP-Requiem in the theater over the holidays, but I just couldn't bring myself to deal with all the movie theater crap.

I guess I'll have to wait 3 to 6 months to see my new releases now, but that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

How do the rest of you feel about this?

I'm glad someone asked this Had this discussion at work earlier...

Home all the way now. I wait for it to come out on Blu and buy or rent what I want to see. With the big screen and 7.1 I am very happy to wait for a movie I want to see. Plus theatre quality sucks... usually.

No annoying teens with their cell phones, loud idiots or whatever!

I have a 46" 1080p HDTV, but only a 5.1 receiver & audio setup. So..the "theater" hasn't been put in my home, yet.

As far as a movie theater goes, I never go unless it's a matinee. Though the Sunday matinee is packed for some films.

FYI: the theater I regularly visit is Ocala Regal Hollywood 16. So, considering it's only a few years old, and the demographic generally docile compared to legit cities, I enjoy it.

I don't get as mad as I used to anymore when I don't get to see a movie in the theaters because I look forward to watching it at home. Sometimes this will back-fire because the movie may come out as an HD-DVD exclusive.

After all the thousands I spent on my home theater, you danm skippy I rather watch a movie at home! When I throw date options, watching a movie at the house has replaced "going to go see a movie at the theaters".

Now that movie makers have learned that they make most of their $ when the movies are released on DVD/BD, the times between movie theater and DVD/BD release has shortened drastically. So I have no problem waiting until it hits BD so I can enjoy all of the perks you listed.

ps. you also forgot to mention that idiot in the theaters who lets his phone ring 8 times, answers it and carries on a conversation!

I gave up on the Movie Theater, too costly, damn rug rats & the Theater here PQ & AQ sucks.

The last 2 times I when to movie theater it was to see StarWars, yes it has been that long. Last time I went it was to see Starwar3, the PQ sucked sooo bad & the AQ Sucked even more.
The previous time it was StarWars Return of the Jedi. Now I am too young to have seen it the 1st time & this is my favorite of all the Starwars & what did I get? A FU^KING LITTLE RUG RAT right behind me going zoom zoom swish swish during the lightsaber sceens, I gave the kid a durty look (I was not the only one) & it shut him up some. The one good thing is that the AQ was A+++ & mostly drowned out that damn kid.

I went to watch Sweeney Todd yesterday at my local theater which was built only a couple years ago. I'm not sure if they have DLP yet, but I'm going to guess that they don't because the picture was blurry as hell. The movie was great, but sheesh I felt I needed glasses or something. So I guess until I can find a threater near me with the fabled DLPs I will prefer my home theater much more.

Home Theater. I hate if I have to use the bathroom during the movie at the theater because I always end up missing something important. Also, the food is cheaper at home.

PAUSE! I totally forgot to mention pause. The single greatest reason to watch movies at home... But then VHS and DVD had that too, but I still went to the theater for better sound and picture. Now though, with Blu-Ray and HD televisions, sound and picture are better at home.

I love my pause button though.

The only time I go slumming to the public theater is for the kids a couple of times a year. If it wasn't for them, I would never go to a public cinema-plex again.

I agree 100% with the OP. The home-theater experience is so enjoyable, I can't seem to think of a single reason other than impatience to go see a movie at the theater.

I also refuse to go to the movies anymore unless it's a triple A title, like when The Dark Knight releases. I refuse for the following reasons:

(1) For my g/f and I it's at least $20 if not pushing $30 for one movie. I can own the damn thing on Blu-ray for that cost.

(2) The picture quality looks terrible compared to Blu-ray hi-def. I just seen National Treasure 2 the other night (first trip to the theater since this past summer) and couldn't help but notice how blurry the image looked the whole time. Huge lack of detail compared to home movies...even upconverts!

The single worst thing about movie theater is the smell of body odor all over the theater. I went to one for the first time there and it was stinky for my 2 hours there. Also the movie sound was extremely low volume, and retards kicking the back of your seat. This theater was the worst i've been too.

Home theater is fantastic. Hosting a movie and having friends over to watch with you is very enjoyable. If the friends stink, I'll push them into the showers before movie starts.
