I agree. I had gotten married shortly before I saw that movie and I kept thinking, "God, I hope this never happens to me."

While not a "boyfriend/girlfriend" relationship, I feel that 'Fish Tank' is a film that understands what that sort of relationship would be like. Of course I've never had a relationship like that, so it could be way different, but it seems like that's accurate.

They don't have to accurately portray them, just show that they actually understand some real qualities.
The first one that comes to mind is Blue Valentine.

To me Hepburn and Fonda's relationship in On Golden Pond does it for me. They seem like the couple everyone knows who has been married for years.

Yes I forgot about this one. The Last American Virgin was a great pick too. Man those are some depressing movies. Def. fit the topic though.

Flipped is a really good one and one of the best family films I have recently seen. Sister owns Little Manhattan but never seen it and haven't heard of the rest.

You have to watch Little Manhattan. It gets a bit juvenile at times (which is expected since it's about kids), but it also touches on some mature stuff along the way. It's a really well-made and lovable film.

I can't believe you haven't heard of Linklater's Before Sunrise/Sunset. Those are probably two of the most realistic romantic films ever made. It's shot like a documentary with some amazing scenery of Vienna. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are so natural in their roles, you'd forget you're watching a movie. Yi Yi, which focuses on family, is also great. It also features some unique yet simplistic cinematography. I highly recommend all of them.
