I have just submitted a poll to see how people feel about Combos. Should be interested to compare to this poll in June:

Universal is HD DVD's bread & butter. Of course they are going to rationalize it as a good thing when it is the only thing that they have.

What I find funny is that it seems like there are 3 types of HD DVD views on this:
1) They're fantastic! They're mulit-functional & I'll pay out the nose for it
2) They would be good if... they were cheaper, they were the only version available, etc...
3) And those who see it from the logical BD point of view in that they are unnecessary and too costly/useless

Note: I believe that #1 is a very small minority (but this is all IMO)

They have lost their mind.

Months after all the talk about HD-DVD picture quality and now they are going to throw it away with the combo disks, it seems that they have lost the north.

Well, my poll was magically deleted. Now, if an HD DVD poster mad the poll, I wonder if it would have been deleted?

Nope.

It's funny because I voted in that poll just before it went down.

The numbers were so lopsided against combos it wasn't even funny.

I guess the propoganda arm couldn't tolerate that.

Josh posted a new one to see what the opinions on Universal combos are, turns out most people didn't like them, so AVSF got rid of it.

The best thing to do would be to buy an X-Box 360 if you like computer games since their games are a billion times better by most people's reckoning & buy a seperate Blu-Ray player since it'll win the "format war".

Also, buy a SACD player.

Oh yeah I noticed that now. I wonder if they'll delete that old thread I just topped then.
Luckily I made a screen grab of it just in case.
Heh heh.

I don't think Universal is giving them a lot of choice.

Either buy Combos or buy someone else's movies.

Heres their mindset.

"Ok, MS just paid us 4 suitcases full of cash, and 2 exotic hookers for each of us. Now, we have to announce 100 titles for hd-dvd for this year as part of the agreement. Since we're going to go neutral anyway, we might as well really make the best of it. 90% of the movies will end up as combo discs. For one, we make more money on them. HD-DVD owners are content starved as it is, might as well screw them by going the extra mile. And most importantly, when we go Blu-Ray, a lot of these suckers will be forced to purchase the movies again on that format since we'll use lossless audio and get another sale on each and every one of them. Sound good? Meeting ended."

Seriously I think this could very well be what they are thinking at the moment. Get Microsoft to pay for everything make some profit selling as many HD DVD's as possible in the time left and then go neutral. Most of the early adopters like good quality so Uni will re-release with better sound / PQ and everone has to repurchase.

It seems to be the usual suspects with the "now I think about it, this is why combos are the greatest idea ever" posts.

It's what they're getting. They better love it, or how can they continue to support HD DVD?
