Criterion The Battle of Algiers (1966)

This one surprises me. In a good way.

Thank you Criterion!

I've never watched this film but based on reviews I will blind buy it. I just hope Amazon decreases the price because right now it's too expensive for my wallet and I already bought 8 criterion films on the last B&N sale.

This is yet another Criterion title that I blind preordered, since I've been wanting it in my collection for at least a couple years and having it on blu should be a special treat. I ordered when it was around $34. I'm not sure why the price was increased by $10 (it happens a lot), but just wait for some time longer; the price will eventually drop again. I'm looking forward to seeing it for sure.

I ordered it at B&N with a 20% coupon. It came down to 34.99 plus free express shipping and should arrive next week. I'm really happy

I'm at odds with this title. But I might just buy it before midnight.
$24.99 at B&N

Worth a blind buy?

It's a great flick. I owned the Criterion DVD for years, but recently upgraded to Blu-ray. The movie really excels in high definition.

Let us know what you think of the movie when it arrives.

New 4K restoration playing at this year's NYFF to celebrate the film's 50th anniversary. I hope we'll get a US BD of the restored version. Rialto is distributing it, so ti seems likely.

Criterion has the rights though, so we probably won't see a new BD as they don't tend to re-release their films when new restorations come out.

Hmm, I know they didn't release the recent 4K restoration of The Third Man, but that's because they lost the rights. They did, however, re-release Playtime with the 4K restored version just a few years after releasing it the first time. Of course the re-release was part of the Tati box-set, perhaps they wouldn't have released it otherwise.

Are there other titles on Criterion BD that have been restored afterwards and not released here?

I think Playtime might be a rare exception where the re-release came in a boxset licensed from Studiocanal, and sourced from their restorations. I don't think they've made a new standalone release of it.

As for others thst have been restored since their CC release, I know Late Spring had a new 4K restored BD released in Japan last year. There are probably others.

Edit: Band of Outsiders is another. I also believe The Last Emperor got a new 4K restoration in addition to a 3D conversion.

That's definitely a fair point, though the old standalone is long-OOP, so they're only selling the restored version.

That's true, but it's not just Criterion that has failed to release it. Bewilderingly, in the three years since it was restored, it has not been released anywhere on BD, except as a 3D-only BD release in Italy.

In the end, I tend to agree that Criterion will most likely not revisit this title, and I'll probably have to import it from somewhere that hopefully includes English subtitles.

Christ, the horrible dubbing for the audio almost ruins the film...

I wonder if an original audio recording exists...

It's overall a pretty rough film with lack of blood and effects.

Nice! I wonder if the new Japanese release also has the new restoration.

There has been no new Blu-ray release from Criterion for "The Leopard," "8 1/2," and "Beauty and the Beast." Those are the only ones I know of, but there may be others.

The Japanese release looks sharper. Not necessarily more detailed though at first glance. Not sure if this is the rumored new 4K master.

The Criterion release has much better compression and fine detail.

Old resto (same scanner noise, too). The new one is a different thing.
