Julia's Eyes Blu-ray Review

Quote:
Optimum Home Entertainment are set to release Spanish director Guillem Morales' Los ojos de Julia a.k.a Julia's Eyes (2010), starring Belén Rueda, Lluís Homar, and Pablo Derqui. Produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), the film tells the story a woman suffering from degenerative sight disease, who discovers her sister, who has already gone blind as a result of the same disease, hanged in the basement of her house. In spite of the fact that everything points to suicide, the woman decides to investigate what she intuitively feels is a murder case, entering a dark world that seems to hide a mysterious presence. Street date is September 12th.

More good news! I was debating ordering the French release, but maybe I'll just hold out for the UK release.

There's one already out in Mexico, don't know if it is Region Free but is at least Region A, it includes English subs. Check it out on Mixup.

I haven't seen this, but Mark Kermode gave it a good review and any Spanish horror produced by Guillermo Del Toro is an instant buy for me. I'm looking forward to it.

Just read this today on joblo.com

IFC has taken up the US and Canadian rights to JULIA'S EYES, and plans to unveil the thriller in August. It will get a theatrical release, and a VOD one as well, I'd assume.

Adam, this isn't good news at all, because IFC is one of the few independent companies in the U.S. that tends to completely ignore big foreign titles.

This is their Blu-ray output:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?studioid=450

And when it comes to international cinema, they have one of the very best contemporary catalogs. tHE films, however, typically end up on SDVD only. Unless MPI licenses the film for the home video market, you are looking at a SDVD release.

Wow! Looking at their BD output is shockingly sad!

Aww, that really isn't good news. I was aware IFC had a very big library but I guess I never realized they have barely released any of it on Blu-Ray.

I was hoping for RipleyLV's sake this was good news, as I know Ripley has been pretty interested in checking out the film, and the French release is obviously B Locked.

Hopefully, the UK release will be A friendly, Ripley! If not, I'll pick it up and you can come over and watch it on my Region Free player.

Aww, thanks,lol. I'll bring the

It's not the end of the world if I can't get it just yet...it just seemed like a solid thriller. I'm sure something will pan out eventually (it does have Guillermo's name attached to it so that should count for something)

In the meantime, we'll just keep up to date on this and other interesting foreign films up and coming!!

Sounds like a plan!

Yeah, I have heard it is very good from a pal whom owns the French release already. Hopefully something will pan out so you can add it to your collection.

Yes we will! There are quite a few interesting French releases coming up in the next few months that I have my eye on already.

This makes me sad....My friend will be traveling to barcelona and I am seriously considering having her pick me up a Blu-ray player from there so I don't have to wait for anything!! The best part would be owning the collector's editions for REC and REC 2. It's alot cheaper then buying a region free player here....

I understand your pain There's quite a few B locked movies that I'd like as well...REC 1/2 would be a set I wouldn't mind either for a good price.

There are several region free blu ray players that I'm told are good and inexpensive from Best Buy over here (kudos to Toddly6666 and MrGbox for informing me of this info )

Insignia NS-BRDVD4 - $99

The Insignia NS-BRDVD2 or BRDVD3 also works. There's apparantly a code you must type in first for these players and then a screen pops up so you can set it to region free. The code is 9113.

I'm heavily contemplating getting one...just have to budget funds

Here's a thread to check out too Multiregion BD Player on a Budget

And here's a list of confirmed players via US Blu-ray players and 50hz compatibility

[Show spoiler]US Blu-ray Players compatible with 50hz content:

Denon DBP1610 [Outputs 50hz content at 50hz - cannot convert 50hz content to another refresh rate]

Samsung BD-P2500 (with latest firmware)
Samsung BD-P2550 [Outputs 50hz content at 60hz]

Note: You will need a 50hz compatible display to play back 50hz content with some of the above US players (eg. Panasonic DMP-BD60) or use a video processor to convert it to a compatible rate.

Other players (including the Samsung players) convert the content to another frame rate (eg. 60hz) so they don't need a 50hz compatible TV.

US Blu-ray Players NOT compatible with 50hz content:

Panasonic DMP-BD30 with firmware 1.6 or later
Panasonic DMP-BD35
Panasonic DMP-BD55
Panasonic DMP-BDT210
