Welcome aboard, Solidus. Yeah the AV forums are shameless. You'll find it much saner over here

Second attempt at a first post here...

Hi, Theo Cupier from AV Forums here.

Looking to learn what I've been missing as someone who has been "disadvantaged" by buying into HD DVD to the tune of about £500.

Point me to the threads with the useful info, please. I wish to learn.

what are you wanting to know? Lossless audio? Better picture quality due to higher bitrates?

Big welcome to you.

well Warner could of gone the other way so its not really your fault. but it does suxx if one was HDDVD so i feel for your well. loss i suppose.

The forum is a mass of "we told you so" at the moment but once it calms down there is some great info to find here.

be sure to check out the insiders thread where we got a heads up about the warner deal some time ago. Some good info comes thru that channel.

the Home page lists all the recent news in a nice fashion which always stays uptodate.

you can have fun in the rant thread, in the off topic discussion area.

like i said its crazy here at the moment but it will calm down. (i hope as i cant take much more )

I must say I feel for you, I'm new to posting here though I've been around for a while.
The Newbie discussion forums are probably a great place to start! Hopefully you'll soon be buying Blu!

I have to be honest and say I don't know if I will. I need convincing, but not in an anti-Blu way.

My fear is that the format war thus far has retarded the disk-based HD market so much, it's given the download world time to catch up (even at the glacial pace people like BT work).

Having lost so much money on the wrong horse once, I am going to be extra vigilant about the possibility of doing the same again and basically need convincing about how likely Bluray is to establish itself before downloading becomes viable, otherwise I may just wait for this.

Thanks for the welcome, though.

Deleting and banning anyone who disagreed with this policy effectively meant that they were propagating the myth that HD-DVD had any chance of success. It never did, it was impossible for it to win from the beginning and anyone who claimed otherwise was lying.

Unfortunately he was often backed in his general views (not specifics) by those who had more credibility.

Not to mention many who challenged these views with a pro Blu-ray perspective (even when backed by facts) were portrayed as out of control fanboys with no grasp on reality.

I guess realities hit hard now.

Hi,
I feel bad for you, I know you are going to find it impossible to buy Blu-ray as well. Did you get my PM?

Wow £500!

I spent around £280 on a player, and another £250 on movies 18 months back, but got most of my money back that Christmas when HD-DVD was still 'HOT'.

There's some talk of trade-ins for HD-DVD movies from the BDA, may be worth holding out if you cannot get top dollar for your stuff on ebay.

For downloads I would say they'll allway be 5 years behind HDM.

I really can't see the point of downloading a movie when you have VOD.

HDM/Blu-ray is safe for at least 10 years IMO and we'll be into the mainstream 3D realm. Packaged media is here to stay.

Best advice out there.

When other sites were spining news about Disney etc switching to HD-DVD at CES, those who followed the insiders thread were aware the BDA were moving in on securing Warner.

There were a few hic-ups, but it was clear the insiders would warn everyone if the shit was going to hit the fan.

Indeed. It was the rumblings on the insider thread and the forum in general (rumblings that were surpressed elsewhere) that prompted me to take the preemptive action of off-loading all my HDDVDs......although I didn't quite have the balls to get rid of the player, sadly. But yeah, that's the thread to keep an eye on.
