Default Speaker recomendation

Something better than hitb? I hear most people on here think you can do much better if you assemble it you'reself

I want to experience some great sound. I've never had a good speaker system. I mostly listen to music off my laptop...
I'm looking to spend around 600? that seems to be what onkyo is going for. But I could go a bit more than that if it's worth it.

Also I'm not sure If I will have the room for surround sound. If so could I just upgrade the front speakers?

I'm not looking for anything on sale as I won't be buying for at least a month. I read the stickies but I really don't know how to tell good speaker specs from bad speaker specs.

could I someone teach me how to fish here?

thanks a ton.

Maiden rules.

And I'm really just shopping around at this time so I'll just say yes to the question?

I offered this recommendation to someone else previously:

Onkyo TX-SR309 5.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver
$199.95

or

Pioneer VSX-521-K 5.1 Home Theater Receiver, Glossy Black
$249.00

Both of these receivers can pass through 3D video (just in case you decide to go this route eventually).

For speakers, these were the highest rated at Amazon for a limited budget:

Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System
$399.00

I'm back once again, and I saved up a little over 1200 (finally!) for my wall to be taken down so I could actually have the room invest in the theater system.

Unfortunately my 1200 dollar ballpark turned into 2300 dollar estimate.

so I figure I should treat myself to something nice soon as a reward for being so damn patient. And I decided I want plenty of room to upgrade so I want this.

a reciever and two really good front speakers I can update to 7.1 3d at some point. What's you guys's opinion of the above recommendation?

side note, what is the cost of ''installing'' quiet rock? I got yet another 1200 dollar figure for materials but haven't contacted anyone about it. mostly because that project is at least 6 months away.

I would skip the extremely overpriced quiet rock and do double 5/8" drywall and green glue.
