So I blind bought The Magnificent Seven a little while ago, and though I am very impressed with the Bluray release quality and picture clarity for a 50+ year old film... it's incredibly boring.
So, name a few great Westerns that you guys/gals really enjoy. Can you recommend; 1. Great action 2. Strong characterization 3. VERY LITTLE BOREDOM 4. Clean. I'm looking for one I can watch while the kids are in the room i.e. no nud1ty. little-to-moderate cussing and moderate violence is ok. Would the new True Grit fit this description? especially #4? I may rent it first. I haven't seen many westerns in my day, Tombstone is really all that comes to mind. What's your fav's? Assume I haven't seen any. ![]() Last edited by ObiTrentKenobi; 06-03-2011 at 01:45 PM. |

Silverado might be a good a bet for you if the kids are around. I personally have not seen it on Blu-ray yet but it is a classic.

Silverado, Back to the Future 3, and The Quick and the Dead are probably the most fun for kids. Quick in the Dead is the most violent, but so stylish and fun that kids would overlook the violence. Plus it's got a young Leonardo DiCaprio!

I remember the 2006 film "3:10 to Yuma" had some good action to it, and was a decent story. I think it's PG-13 or something, so it should be clean enough. It should fit the bill.
"The Good, the Bad, and the Weird" is practically non-stop action, and should fit the criteria really well. "Wild Wild West" is pretty dumb and nobody really seems to like it, but there's no shortage of action there. Kids should love it. Otherwise, one would be hard-pressed to find a western that's actually exciting. ![]() |

I don't know if I've ever seen a western that fits your description. By definition, westerns are usually either bloody as hell (The Wild Bunch) or long as hell (TGTBATU/OUATITW).
A couple westerns that stick closer to the two-hour timeframe include: For a Few Dollars More (1965) Unforgiven (1992) - pretty graphic I seem to remember 3:10 to Yuma (2007) - pretty graphic I seem to remember You might also try Tombstone (1993ish)... I think of that as a "softcore" western... Like a mainstream crossover I mean. |

The Magnificent Seven boring????
![]() If you think that then you'd probably think many of the other great westerns are boring too, but here are some of my favs: High Noon Shane The Searchers Silverado (ok, you might like that one) BTW: Character development =\= boredom. |

Here's one that is often overlooked, but a great film. Its not as hokey as a lot of the 50's and 60's westerns
and Bruce Dern does a great job as a villain. Highly recommended. ![]() Also these are kid friendly: The Searchers The original True Grit Rio Bravo |

A lot of old westerns are incredibly boring. That's just how many of those movies were, but there are some gems. Just depends on personal taste. For example I love the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns, even like some traditional westerns such as The Searchers, Wild Bunch, 3:10 to Yuma remake, but others I just cannot stand.
With movies like this I always make sure to netflix them first, because they are really hit or miss with me. For example Once Upon a Time in the West is a very highly acclaimed movie, but its literally one of the most boring movies ive ever seen. It was very painful to sit through that one. Same deal with How the West was Won. Very boring for me. The original True Grit is great too. It's just a good, interesting story and Wayne plays such a dirtbag in it, its entertaining. There's the Cohen Bros remake, but I couldnt understand anything Jeff Bridges was saying, and overall I didnt think it was as good as the original. Also, Unforgiven is fantastic. Tombstone is one of the faster-paced ones I can think of.
The Professionals is my favorite and second is probably The Searchers. I had to fast forward through "How the West was Won" a lot. |
