On EngadgetHD, one of the key new features being on display at CES was the ability to include a "portable copy" of a movie on the Blu-ray disc, for transfer to a PSP.

I don't know about you guys, but I have a PS3 and PSP, and I'm super-excited about this news!! Such a convenient feature instead of having to convert the video!

This was one of the reasons WB probably went Blu. Extra storage on a BD to allow for a compressed portable version of the movie you can copy to your mobile device.

Basically, no need for downloading. You get the 1080p version and a mobile version on the same disc.

Bad news? UMD was doomed to failure due to its CD in cassette tape design

I've had a PSP since launch. I could never stand that fact that the movies were UMD. Games are fine. But Movies should've always been on the memory stick.

this was already posted somewhere. i already complained about it there.

this will be available in select titles, with no date set. not only will this fail horribly, it will probably never happen

Now with the new 16gig Memory Stick announced you can take quite a few movies to go. I think one compressed movie is about 600megs right?

@ psp resolution my movies were coming out around 400-500mb

UMD is quite successful for it's main purpose - games for the PSP. Not going anywhere on that front AFAIK and hope.

Movies that were overpriced and the wrong selection are what doomed them on that format - although Kingdom of Heaven was pretty impressive to say the least.

The problem with MemorySticks (and SD cards for that matter) is how easy it is to lose them .. and how fragile they are in comparison to the cartridge design of the UMD. MemorySticks are rewritable, so a 8GB or 16GB MS can hold a lot of movies that you can erase after you're tired of them. The key is to own the DVD (in this case the BD). Seems like having both versions on the BD is a good idea (along with an iphone version perhaps?).

That announcement would be reason enough for me to go out and buy a PSP...that and Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core.

This is awsome - when I first got the PSP I always thought this would be a great idea - much better than having to buy a silly UMD. I agree with other comments about pricing on UMD being a failure point. They needed to be $5-10 at most. I was thinking that the complany could include a UMD version with a DVD/Blu-Ray...but a down-loadable one is MUCH better.

crisis core is reason enough to buy 2

just make sure you get the lite and not the phat. check out youtube for a loading time comparison

Since Blu-Ray was announced i've been thinking the possibility of Blu-Ray umd's on the PSP 2 maybe? 3-5 times greater than it holds now

Pretty cool, I'd love to see the same ability in conjunction with Apple to get a movie onto an iPod or iPhone.

It's also a good bit of news to point out to people who still think Blu-Ray has no concept of Managed Copy.

What about the fact that with a new PSP 2000 you can display this movie on a tv. You now have a portable standard-def version of select blu-rays.

I dont know about you, but that feature sounds AMAZING.
