There was nothing I loved more as a child than TMNT, the original cartoon, the movies, the toys, I still have all of them. I am still awaiting the film franchise reboot they've been discussing for years now. This is still a year away though.

Yes it is still a year away and I blame you for getting me excited for nothing. Would've been happy with a sequel to the animated film and not a reboot, FYI.

I'm not sure I dig the art style, but I'd have to see it animated (I said the same thing about Spectacular Spider-Man not looking good, and I was so wrong about that after I saw it in motion).

Some points:
-Leonardo is holding his swords kind of weird. They also look a tad short for katana, but I think they are ninja swords anyway.
-Donatello is way the hell too happy.
-Michaelangelo appears to have sickle blades on his nunchaku now. (EDIT: Don has a bladed spear now, too!?)

I wonder if they'll actually put their bladed weapons to use and actually cut bad guys this time (but I'm sure they'll probably just be stabbing robots, as usual).

Looks pretty good so far. Here's hoping they incorporate some of the characters from the Original Toon.

I'd love to see modern more serious takes of Krang, Rocksteady, and Bebop. Among others.

I don't think you CAN do Krang serious, he's a tiny alien that manipulates machinery and his intellect to further his plans of galactic domination. I do want the TV turtles movie on blu-ray...

One of the TMNT blogs has info about the new Nickelodeon Series. Sounds decent...

Sounds like they're going with a blend of the classic comic version and 80's cartoon.

For those who don't want to follow the links... here's a repost to be handy.

Nickelodeon TMNT Fan Preview Event - Details on Story, Characters, and Designs

Nickelodeon has clarified the non-disclosure agreement signed to be able to attend their Fan Preview Event held last week, and we can talk about almost everything that we saw! Woohoo! That said, it does need to be specified that everything seen at the event was a Mutation in Progress, and what we saw may not actually be part of the final product when it comes out in a year and a half. So proceed with caution, but here are the basics of the story, characters, and designs that we were told and shown throughout the day. If you have any additional questions that I haven't covered, you can either comment or send me an e-mail and I'll do my best to answer them. I'll have another post later that details the "pilot" animatic that we were shown, and yet another dedicated to the action figures.

Let's start with Splinter. His new design is COMPLETELY different from anything that's been done before. He is quite tall and wears a much more traditional kimono than he's ever worn before. Personally, I like it. And from the little tidbits that we were given, I really think Splinter's story has potential to be one of the strongest things about the new series.

Splinter's origin is based on him being the human Hamato Yoshi in Japan. Human Hamato Yoshi has/had a daughter (not clear on what happened to her). In Japan, he and Oroku Saki/Shredder were rivals and after a battle Shredder believes his nemesis to be dead. But Yoshi fled to New York, where, of course, his life got even more interesting. When Shredder learns that Yoshi is still alive, he comes to New York and brings lots of badness with him. Oh, and he looks completely badass.

One really cool part about the new design for the Turtles' Lair is that Splinter has a room with a "miracle tree." Basically, a small pinhole of light from the surface comes through and in this spot is growing a fantastic tree. Splinter also keeps some kind of scroll that has some sort of representation of his daughter on it.

While Splinter is the Turtles' father figure, their "mother" figure is the empty jar of ooze that transformed them. The jar is labeled TCRI. And just like in the original Eastman & Laird comics, there is a big ominous TCRI building in the city, and no one really knows what goes on inside of it. We saw designs for one (giant) room in the TCRI building, where Shredder has a big long mutation device. Basically, you put a person/whatever in one end, and get a mutant out the other.

The Utroms are now known as the Kraang. I think this is a good compromise considering Krang's legendary status as part of the original cartoon. Their design is much more "scary," for lack of a better way of describing it. They are very "squiggly" with long skinny tenticles and it sounds like they will move very spider-like. That is, when they're not in their skeleton suits. The suits serve a double-purpose. One, is because they can't survive in our atmosphere, and two is that the suits can project a holographic human form. As the series progresses, it sounds like these robotic Kraangs will become part of Shredder's Foot army (and since they're robotic, the Turtles can be more violent on them within the constrains of children's television).

Baxter Stockman is established as a character in the "pilot" animatic we were shown (more on that later). He is African-American, as he is in the original comics and the 4Kids cartoon series. We meet him as a disgruntled employee looking to exact revenge on the company that fired him (for being late, once). More on him when I put together my description of the "pilot" animatic.

April has been completely redesigned as a 16-year-old teenage girl. The Turtles meet her when they rescue her and her parents from being kidnapped by the Kraang (or Shredder? not exactly sure), presumably for their mutation experiments. This is from the actual first episode, which is not the "pilot" we saw, so we really weren't told any more details about how that plays out, but it obviously ends with April becoming a regular visitor to the Turtles down in their Lair. As the series progresses, she will be studying with Splinter to become a kunoichi - female ninja. Oh, and Donatello has a HUGE crush on her. HUGE. It is one part weird, and one part adorable. It sounds like this may be a short-lived crush and not an on-going part of the series, although - like with everything else - I can't say for certain.

And speaking of the Turtles... they are essentially the same TMNT we all know and love. (Yaaaaay!) Personality-wise and build-wise, they seem to be very much modeled on the 2007 TMNT CGI-movie. Michaelangelo is the goofy little brother, Raphael is well-built and gruffy, Donatello is kinda lanky and (of course) nerdy, and Leonardo is somewhere between Raph and Don in size and is actually the official leader. In the script reading we saw, which I believe was from the actual first episode, Splinter officially declared Leonardo to be the leader of the group.

Overall the Turtles' designs looked great. My biggest problem was that somewhere down the line they all grew a third toe. Not the exaggerated heel that has sometimes been referred to as a "third toe," but an actual third toe up front. None of the art we had seen before arriving at Nickelodeon had a third toe. And the walkway up to the studios had been decorated with a bunch of two-toed green footprints. So there were no early signs that something was "a-foot" (hah!) with the toes. When I started noticing it throughout the 2D animatic I thought this was just some weird mistake happening. But then I also noticed it in the 3D model we were shown. And then we were shown the action figures, which had three very distinct toes on each foot. Now it seemed clear that it wasn't a mistake. But really, it's kind of creepy. And considering how spot-on the rest of the designs are, I don't know why they would decide to go mess it up with something like a third toe. Nickelodeon seemed kind of defensive when asked about it, so I don't know what the chances are of them actually changing this. Sadness.

And while Casey Jones is not a part of the picture for the moment, expect him to eventually be. While it is not currently planned for him to be part of season 1, he will likely brought in for season 2. Although, Nickelodeon seems open to bringing him into season 1 if, while during the writing process, a particular need for Casey to be around comes up. And while we won't likely be seeing him, prepare to see signs from him, as it is planned to have graffiti tagged by Casey be part of the background. When we do finally see him, he is planned to be a bit older than April, 18-20, and due to the limitations of television CGI will have short hair.

That's what I've put together for now - Like I said, feel free to ask questions and I'll answer them in a future post to clarify anything that I can.

Nickelodeon TMNT Fan Preview Event - The "Pilot" Animatic

Adding to yesterday's post, now I'm going to attempt to describe the details of the animatic "pilot" we were shown. As I've previously mentioned, this "pilot" was not of the actual first episode and consisted of 2D still drawings (with some animated elements here and there) with voice and music tracks. Once again, this is a Mutation in Progress. This pilot was 25 minutes long, and would need to be trimmed down to 22 minutes to become an actual episode. Also, I make no promises of how accurate my memory is on the details of this one, and I might have flip-flopped some of the scenes. Anyone else who attended can feel free to correct or add details. With all that said, let's go...

The episode started with the Turtles training with Splinter in their Lair. The Turtles' training evolves into an argument about whether or not they can go up to the streets. There is a lot of humorous banter between Splinter and the Turtles using the repeated line, "YES... and no." The argument ends with the Turtles not being allowed to go above.

After training, Donatello presents the others with his newest invention: The world's most advanced MP3 player. He calls it the T-pod; it has a special AI chip inside it and can hold a bazillion songs. Mikey is in awe of it and slips the ear buds under his bandana, into his "ears." How many songs are actually on the MP3 player? Three.

April stops by the Lair with some pizza, which they then eat and add to a chart of "Best Pizza in New York." April invites the Turtles to join her at the movies that night. Donatello is thrilled, as he has an obvious crush on her. However, the Turtles have just been told they can't go to the streets, so it takes some persuasion of Leonardo to decide that they will all sneak out later.

Cut to later that night and we see the Turtles sneaking out of the Lair. Mikey still has the T-pod with him. The Turtles reach the surface and start heading toward the theater. On their way, they come across a man wearing a weird metal "suit" trying to break into a building. The man is Baxter Stockman. The Turtles watch him for a bit, laughing at him because his attempts at breaking in aren't going so well and his "suit" is more clunky than it is intimidating. They eventually show themselves and beat him up, leaving him in a dumpster.

The Turtles continue to the movie theater, scaling rooftops and fire escapes as they go. At one point, Leo (or Mike?) runs through a bee hive. Because of their earlier distraction, it is late and by the time they get to the theater, an annoyed April is just leaving the theater. Mike realizes he no longer has the T-pod,

Back in the alley, Baxter has found the T-pod, which Mike had dropped. He plugs into it and the AI chip empowers his suit, transforming it from clunky scrap and into super powerful armor.

By the time the Turtles get back to the alley, Baxter and the T-pod are gone.

The next day, the Turtles are hanging out in their Lair when April stops by. She shows annoyance at the fact that she was "stood up" the previous night. They are watching TV, and on the TV they see a news report about a man in a super suit attacking an office building. It's Baxter, and he's having revenge against the company that recently fired him (for being late, once). Awhile later, the Turtles sneak out again to find Baxter.

When they do find him, Baxter proceeds to kick their butts in his now powerful suit. Eventually, Leonardo goes back to the bee hive they had run into the previous night, grabs it, and shoves it into Baxter's suit through the face mask. Baxter, who is completely sealed inside the suit, gets stung by many now-angry bees. The Turtles use the distraction to dislodge the T-pod from the suit, and it crumbles into the worthless scrap metal it started out as.

The Turtles return to their Lair and a very suspicious Splinter.

Sounds pretty good so far can't wait. My parents said I was obsessed with the TMNT. I remember being huge fans but I guess I liked them even when I was really really young. I mainly had TMNT and Transformers toys I remember.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Voice Cast Includes Sean Astin & Jason Biggs

Quote:
he voice cast for the upcoming reboot of the animated series on NIckelodeon has been revealed. Speaking to EW, Astin(Sam from LOTR) reveals that he will be voicing Raphael, and also gives the names of the other actors that will be lending their voices to his brothers..
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming back with a bang next yer. Not only is a new live action movie in the works, but Nickelodeon is airing a brand new animated series too. And EW have the skinny of who will be providing the voices for those lean green fighting machines..

Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings‘ Sam, The Goonies‘ Mikey, and Rudy‘s Rudy) will be voicing red-masked Raphael. He’ll be joined by a cast that includes Jason Biggs as Leonardo, Greg Cipes as Michelangelo, and Rob Paulsen as Donatello. The series will be executive produced by Ciro Nieli, Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, and is currently set to debut in Fall 2012, although select fans can get an exclusive first look at the reimagined Turtles at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.

Interestingly, Paulsen voiced Raphael in the original cartoon. EW also have an interview with Astin, here are some excerpts..

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Raphael has typically been portrayed as the grumpiest Turtle. Is that still true in the new series?

SEAN ASTIN: Do you mean to say the coolest?

Well, he was explicitly “cool, but rude” in the original cartoon. Is he still rude?

He’s still working through issues. He’s really good at what he does, and he doesn’t suffer fools lightly. Sometimes that arrogance can get him in a little bit of trouble.

You’re obviously a little biased, but is he your favorite Ninja Turtle?
He’s everybody‘s favorite Ninja Turtle. Raphael’s the coolest, no question about it. Ask anybody.

Hmmm, I dunno, I know a lot of people who think Michelangelo is the coolest. He’s the party dude!

Yeah, if you like that sort of thing. [Laughs] But Raphael is Raphael, you know what I mean? Everyone tells me, “Raphael! He’s the red one with the sai?” Everybody knows the Turtles by their identifying characteristic, which I just think is hilarious.

Astin also reveals that this incarnation of the Turtles might be a little less surfer dude than previous ones..

I don’t know if it’s that far. I don’t think it’s [adopts a perfect 'Bill and Ted' impression] “Dude, how you doin’, dude!” It’s just not quite as intense. A little bit more refined. They’ve got a slightly better education, maybe. More refined chemicals.

Just saw the trailer, linked from the SuperHero Hype website...and I'm not impressed at all. The show looks like its aimed at 5-year-olds. The animation looks like something out of a really disappointing video game, and the voices don't really work. Mikey comes off as a toddler, and the rest are just empty. I was hoping for something along the lines of the 2007 film, but what i saw instead was an abomination to the franchise's legacy.

I had doubts about the show when I saw the concept art, but after seeing it in motion, I've come to like the show. I like that Shredder is actually menacing and what they're doing with Krang is pretty cool. The 80s show will always have a special place in my heart though.

I saw one episode of this and thought that it was all right, though I wish the animation would have been something from TMNT (2007) the graphics on the characters looked awesome in that movie!

My kids and I love this show, and as someone who grew up Turtle, I love the inspiration the writers gather from all the different lore and incarnations that has come before.
