New PS3 Model CECH-3000 - the return of backwards compatibility? No.

The recent announcement of the CECH-3000B 320GB model which will consume less power and weight less, appears to include an additional feature that will make the PS3 much more valuable and make many PS3 gamers happy!
After reading the specs on the Japanese Sony website, it’s clear that the new PS3 model will have PS2 compatibility with proprietary software. (If the translation is correct) This is what the translation reads:
“This product, “PlayStation 2″ are having a compatibility with proprietary software”

Interesting!! Also, I could've sworn there was a PS3 hardware thread... I couldn't find it though.

EDIT: Don't get TOO excited now! Upon further investigation, I have discovered pretty much the same translated sentence for the older 160/320GB models. Whether Sony has just recently added this (and is planning a firmware update or something), or these are all wacky translations has yet to be determined.

I remember a lot of people talking about PS2 backwards compatibility through emulation like it is for PSONE games. Nothing really ever came of it and Sony definitely never made any announcement. It's possible, and if it was software, it would just be a firmware update as opposed to new hardware.

I had the original 60gb system for a while, it's gone now and I have a new system. I haven't missed the PS2 backwards compatibility yet, but I'm sure I will at one point...I really want to play the Suikoden games that have been sitting on the shelf.
