Kudos to those of you who like it. You've seen something I haven't.
For me, this was a throwback to the old Alfred Hitchcock style thrillers of the old days. It had a story that was character-driven and it took it's time building on those characters, which built to a CHILLING climax and a hell-of-a-ghost story. Great twist ending that caught me off-guard and a WONDERFUL performance by Nichol Kidman.

Those kids were creepy as hell and the comnflict between the young girl and her mother was nail-biting. It was a bit slower paced, but it built on suspence until it finally delivered.

WONDERFUL story-telling.

I liked the film, but I thought the ending was telegraphed a mile off. The Orphanage was a better film, but it had a way too literal ending that ruined the movie for me.

The best ending ever for a movie like this was The Innocents. That ending haunts me.

Thats OK. We all go through that with certain films too. Plenty of other stuff to watch. No worries.

I was very disappointed with The Orphanage. As for the ending being telegraphed.....how so? I thought they did a helluva job keeping things ambiguous. I had no idea what was really going on.

Me too. Having seen
[Show spoiler]The Sixth Sense should've hinted me of the twist
, but it's very cleverly written and directed I never expected the ending.

Side conversation regarding "The Other", not "The Others". "The Other" is a Fox film as stated. Other than that we're on the same page. Please see the other post of mine .... Who's on first ....

When the husband came back, I knew exactly what was going on. I never understood why people didn't see the end of Sixth Sense coming a mile off too. Maybe I think like a ghost story.

The Innocents is much better because the ending isn't just a twist, it's disturbing and still ambiguous enough to make you wonder what you just saw. I don't like things to be tied up too neatly. That's what ruined the end of The Orphanage for me. They felt the audience needed to see everything and understand everything. Bad modern scriptwriting.

I have this blu-ray already. I think I bought it from FYE because they carry Canada released blu's. So if you want it now... Look for it at FYE.

I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with you--
Agree-- THE INNOCENTS is far superior
Agree-- the ending of THE ORPHANAGE really let me down-- it was so great until they not only tied it up neatly, but made everything much less scary!
Disagree-- THE OTHERS-- I didn't find the ending so predictable.. to me I was wondering who the ghosts or ghosts actually were... and the ending was satisfying to me..

The three ghosts helped to throw me off of the REAL ending. I figured out about them but still did not see the OTHER ending coming.

When I finally figured it out, I was pleasantly suprised.

I loved this movie and will be picking up the blu-ray just to bad its a Walmart exclusive as I do not like shopping at Walmart for much if at all. An exclusive blu-ray will get me there though if I like the movie enough which in this case I do. If I see the canadian release before this is out I will pick that up as I doubt there is any difference in the transfer. As for the Innocents I have not see it will check it out this weekend.

Add the original version of The Haunting with Claire Bloom to your list.

I wish The Innocents would come out on bluray in the US. The widescreen format looks great on DVD, but I'm thinking the cinematography might look a bit better on bluray.

Great news, hopefully the BD will get some of the bonus features from the 2 disk dvd set. ( and a progressive transfer ) I have the Alliance Blu that is interlaced and has zilch for extras.

One of the few great ghost story films of the past 20 years.

P.S.
Speaking of great ghost films, The Innocents is way overdue for a special edition BD. Deborah Kerr is magnificent in that film, one of the top 3 great ghost film of all time.

Never seen The Innocents, thanks for the heads up guys. My wife and I love some good ghost stories, too bad it has not been released on blu-ray.
