Industry expects new bargain price for PS3 to be announced in August; Will bargain 360 and Wii bundles help reignite the market?

Sony is planning another Gamescom barnstormer – with a PlayStation 3 price cut on the cards.

An announcement is expected at the August event in Cologne. Trade insiders are hoping for an RRP of £199.99, with retail prepared to go to £179.99.

But Microsoft might have to act in response if it wants 360 to be the No.1 console. That means a price drop or a value-oriented Kinect bundle are possibilities.

Both Sony and Microsoft gave us a ‘no comment’ when questioned about upcoming price activity.

With a £199.99 pricetag, it would indicate a $249 US price, which will put MS in a corner and probably force them to a $50 drop across the board as well.

Why would it be $249? The exchange rate has nothing to do with it. It will be $199.99 here, too.

Also, this will happen. People say it is a "rumour", but it will come true. It's been two years since the last price drop. PS3 is five years old already, so the PS3 is bound for another price drop. If you are familiar with this industry, then you would be expecting a price drop.

So you're saying $299 for a video game console with Blu-ray playback, internet browser, free online play, and other services isn't cheap enough? If the amount of money needed to make a PS3 profitable drops down, then I say bring on the price drop.

Simple logic and math (and yes the change is part of it)

Right now the US price is $299 and the Uk price £255.30.
It is therefore logical to imagine a £199.99 would translate to a $249 here, $229 if we're lucky. $199 for the PS3 would be great for buyers but would be a pretty desperate move from Sony frankly.

Looking at their projections of keeping 15m PS3s sold this year, they will probably need a $50 price cut to keep it. It's probably happening. I imagine they could still be breaking even with that.

Gamescom is where they announced the Slim and the last price cut.

So what about its features? It's still running on five years old. It can always be cheaper, and to say otherwise is rather ignorant.

Simple logic would actually dictate it would be $199. Also, exchange rate has nothing to do with pricing on consoles. Regardless of currency, consoles are usually the same in every region. I've also been hearing the price would be dropping £100, meaning that in many places it is still £299. I don't know if that is a mistake on the media who is reporting this.

Also, this is not a desperate move by Sony. It would actually be expected, considering the last price drop was two years ago. This is how the industry operates.

New PS3 model to be announced at Gamescom

Sony is no stranger to announcing new models or SKUs for the PlayStation 3. Recently revealing and releasing a new model in Japan, Sony has made numerous enhancements to the hardware and as a result been able to offer better performing hardware to consumers. Now it appears a newly designed PS3 may be announced soon.

During a lengthy interview with IndianVideogamer.com, Atindriya Bose -- PlayStation India Country Manager – revealed that a new PS3 model is being discussed and that it will have a slightly different internal design, but won’t differ much in functionality over current models.

Gamescom will begin on August 17th and continue until August 20th.

I'd be really surprised if a price cut wasn't announced. Maybe Sony will just make the 320GB model the entry level PS3 for $299? We'll see.

I think that depends on whether you need one now, or willing to hold out a bit longer for a better price (seeing as you can get a discount at Target through your brother).

I won't rule out the possibility of a price drop in August, seeing as it would coincide with other back-to-school specials.

I would say that. Yes, I would. $300 is not cheap. I don't care what all bells and whistles come with it. At this stage in the game, getting new people on board is about price. The PS3 has the games, it just needs more buyers.

Sales for PS3 have not risen significantly and people need to recall that it wasn't until the PS2 got to below $200 that it got the majority of it's sales. If Sony wants to have any hope of putting a dent into the 360 marketshare a price cut will be the thing to do that.

Plus its easy to say something is "cheap enough" when you already own it.
