Thumbs up Preferences For Collectible Packaging

I recently took to collecting cool-looking/rare Blu-ray packaging, but I've learned that I'm developing tastes for what I like and don't like.

For instance, I really like it when there's some sort of sculpture, toy or creatively designed case made especially for the movie. Thus, I'm pretty excited for the upcoming releases of Jurrassic Park Ultimate:

Pirates of the Caribbean Four-Movie:

...and even the Scarface Humidor edition (which I may actually buy since it's an extremely limited edition):

On the other hand, there are some types of "collector's editions" that don't tend to tickle my fancy in the least. What I really don't like is when the "collectable" packaging is little more than a big cardboard box and some paper products (books, postcards, etc.). For example, I'm not excited over Ben Hur Ultimate:

Citizen Kane Ultimate:

...or even the packaging of the Star Wars box set, even if I'm looking forward to the movies themselves:

In fact, I think it's a (minor) tradgedy that Star Wars doesn't have some cooler Blu-ray packaging given the collectable potential of such a set. I mean, can you imagine death star packaging or a big ewok head or something cool like that?

I'm also getting a little bored of digibooks/steelbooks and iron packs because they never really wow me like more elaborate packaging.

Those are my tastes. Is anyone with me? What are your preferences?

Except star wars i love all collectors and limited editions. Poc, scarface, ben hur, citizen kane looks cool imo. i already preordered poc and scarface because they are more then cool again imo, the quality of box sets are more important for me. Jurassic park toy looks so cheap in that photo. if it is or was a good movie i dont think so much and buy it. Because movie deserves. my choices are depending to what movie is that or quality of box set,toy or inside of it. i think Star wars is a regular boxset like superman. if you like superman or star wars order it. Who cares

I like this thread!

I am the opposite to the OP. I dislike sculptures and figures. Usually the figures are cheap looking anyways, and it is rare that I find a sculpture packaged with the movies that is of any good quality.

I definitely prefer SteelBooks, but I also like the paper packaging collectibles.

I have taken some of those paper packages and mounted them in a frame and placed them on a wall. It looks much nicer in an arranged format. I also collect and frame lobby cards because they remind me of the theatre experience when I was a kid.

Although I enjoy looking at statues and sculptures, I would never display them because they take up too much room. I think I have two -- the golden idol from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and a glass apple from SNOW WHITE.

I would much prefer to have a variety of movies than a display case focusing on one or two or five movies.

Having said all of that, I've cut back on my collectible packaging purchases to mainly SteelBooks. They look nice on the shelf and my walls are full.

With regards to STAR WARS, Lucas knows how to market these things. He is selling the barebones release now, and next year, after everyone has purchased their copy, I am willing to bet that he will have new versions with collectibles. That is what he did with the original trilogy on DVD. I think he is trying to 3D them as well.

My favourite types of editions:
1) Steelbooks (movies and games)
2) Ironpacks (movies)
3) Figurines/Figures/Sculptures, etc (mainly games)
4) Artbooks/Soundtracks/Artcards (mainly games)
5) Extra downloadable content (games)

Space problems are actually something I'm running into now. I have a lot of collectable packaging (5 life-sized busts, an Alien egg, Identity Disc, Luxo Jr. lamp, several masks and large collector's boxes and steelbooks) but don't really have a good place to put it at the moment.

I want to buy/make shelving for my man cave, but I have four young kids with what I call "tornado fingers" who would quickly rip apart anything they could reach.

That said, it's not going to stop me from collecting more!

The Collectors boxes are my favorite boxes, GWTW, Wizard of Oz, Sound of music etc. etc.

When it comes to figures i love them also, as long as they are nice done with alot of passion to them. I don't like tiny figures (10-12") and is more fan of the bigger ones (14"+).

Also i only buy movies i like, even if the steelbook, box, ironpack and so on are really nice, i only buy the once i like (im a opener and don't keep them sealed).
The only sealed copies i have are the once i have dipped several times (Wizard of Oz, Snow White, Texas Chain Saw... and now Sucker Punch), other wise i open.

I certainly like the toy, but I prefer if the toy is the case. Like the Batpod, the Watchmen Owl, Transformers, Star Trek and Toystory Buzz. They are taking up space though...

Aside from that, SBs take the cake and I think a little harder about collectors editions that are just boxes with paper extras...

For those who have set up displays, I'd love to see them! I'm trying to brainstorm what I want to do with all of my stuff.

BTW, nice collection/set up, LeAnn!
