Default Best Special Features

I've been buying blu-rays for about 7-8 months now and collecting most of the movies that I've been wanting to watch so far.

One of the great things about owning the actual blu-ray are some of the special features that come along with it. I was curious as to what some of you would recommend as some of the best special features/commentaries you have seen on blu-ray so far?

Some of my favourite special feature docs are from:
- Avatar Extended Collectors Edition
- Kick-Ass Making Of
- Inception Making Of
- Social Network Making Of
- Taxi Driver

It's from the 60th anniversary DVD, but the making of piece for Saving Private Ryan is really good. I was glad that it was included on the BD.

Alien Anthology has tons of special features. I have seen a few of them and they are pretty entertaining.

From the review on this site:

Quote:
...All told, there are over 60 hours of special features and an unbelievable 12,000 images, from storyboards and sketches to production stills and cast portrait galleries....
I highly recommend this set due to the PQ/AQ being superb, great movies in general and the special features are great!

Usually I voraciously consume the special features on all of my BDs, but lately I've been too busy watching the movies themselves.

I'd say that in general Pixar movies have the best special features. It seems that they are universal in including a ton of bonus content, every possible aspect of the making of, previews for other movies, and even games. I actually played the cooking game in Ratatouille for like an hour one time.

LOTR is an easy choice because of the sheer bulk and variety of them.

I watched the making of Black Dynamite and The Fighter recently, and both were great. BD because it offered insight into the thought process and even pointed out some mistakes that were not intentional and kept because they fit. It made the movie that much more authentic. The Fighter's making of doc was great because it really hammered home just how much they nailed the story, and how much Christian Bale deserved accolades for his portrayal of Dick Eklund.

Most of the best have already been listed, but I would definitely put Inferno: The Making of 'The Expendables' documentary as one of the best! Especially if you are a massive action/Stallone fan (which I am)!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the extras (especially the BD Live extras) on Tropic Thunder are among the best I've seen in 10 years.

Do The Right Thing has the best and most insane amount of special features I've seen on a Blu Ray. I have no idea how they could manage to stuff so much stuff on a single disc with a high bit rate and a great picture for the main movie itself as well.

Just to name a few that will be out in the coming months, that appear to have outstanding extras:

Star Wars
Jurassic Park
Ben-Hur
Lion King
Animal House
Halloween II(original)

One that I think will suffer is Dazed & Confused as it won't be getting the Criterion treatment on BD...at least not initially.

The Lord of the Rings EE extras have still not been topped. Very informative, very entertaining...and very long! Over 5 hours of making-of documentaries per movie, and each movie includes FOUR audio commentaries. I can watch these extras over and over.
The Fellowship director/writers commentary is my all-time favorite commentary track. The perfect balance of artistic insight, technical mumbo jumbo, and funny stories from the set. Again, both highly informative and highly entertaining.

Second place goes to the Blade Runner 5-Disc set. Seriously, the primary making-of doc is over three hours long. It covers everything from the author of the original book to the film gaining cult status. There is even a video all about the design of the posters! Talk about comprehensive.

Yea I really enjoyed that one too...that was one of my first blu's and I went through everything on that!

There are some great suggestions, I'm thinking I've to hold back a bit on the buying and actually go through some of these, especially the Alien Anthology and LOTR special features!
