The purpose of this thread is to have one place for all talk regarding the new OLED (Organic light-emitting diode), technology.
The basic positives for this technology are the following; 1. Production Cost - Since OLEDs can be printed onto any suitable substrate using an inkjet printer or even screen printing technologies,they can theoretically have a significantly lower cost than LCDs or plasma displays. Printing OLEDs onto flexible substrates opens the door to new applications such as roll-up displays and displays embedded in fabrics or clothing. OLED pixel colors appear correct and unshifted, even as the viewing angle approaches 90 degrees from normal. 3. Better Contrast Ratio - LCDs use a backlight and cannot show true black, while an "off" OLED element produces no light and consumes no power. Better Power Consumption - OLED's are powered off in black and Energy is also wasted in LCDs because they require polarizers which filter out about half of the light emitted by the backlight. Additionally, color filters in color LCDs filter out two-thirds of the light. 5. Better Response Time - OLEDs also have a faster response time than standard LCD screens. Whereas a standard LCD currently has an average of 4-8 millisecond response time, an OLED can have less than 0.01ms response time. (source = http://www.samsungsdi.com/contents/e...ed/type01.html) 6. Thinness - OLED are much thinner than either LCD's or Plasmas.. Sony has already released a model that is 0.3-mm thin. Lifetime - The biggest technical problem for OLEDs is the limited lifetime of the organic materials.In particular, blue OLEDs historically have had a lifetime of around 14,000 hours (5 years at 8 hours a day) when used for flat-panel displays, which is lower than typical lifetime of LCD, LED or PDP technology – each currently rated for about 60,000 hours, depending on manufacturer and model. But in 2007, experimental PLEDs were created which can sustain 400 cd/m² of luminance for over 198,000 hours for green OLEDs and 62,000 hours for blue OLEDs. Price - As with any new technology the first generations are more expensive than existing technology, but price has already shown to drop. Technology in use; 1. Sony's released 11" TV. Samsung Builds World's Biggest OLED TV
Samsung said its 21-inch OLED display features 6.22 million pixels in wide ultra-extended graphics array (WUXGA). The OLED offers brightness of 400 nit, contrast ratio of 5,000:1, color gamut of 75 percent and fast response times, making it ideal for high definition video, hope they get kinks out as i think they deteriorate faster than today's LCDs and plasma screens. |

Whatever... New TVs sporting new technologies are alway plagues with issues and short commings, it usualy takes a few revisions to get it just right. In the mean time battle tested LCD, and Plasma technology is at their peak performance and relyabillity. New TV's that support new tecnology will push the price of older TVs down. That's he true beauty of progression.

6.22 megapixels is huge, but they are cheaty bastards.
i dont get how they come to this number... it says WUXGA, so either 1900x1200 or 1900x1080, meaning some 2 million pixels. even counted separately as red,green,blue subpixels gives either 6.156 or 6.84 megapixels, not 6.22. what's the deal here? also, largest oled or not, it's still small for a TV. they are nuts to brag about it. |

That would be great! A great compromise, as the biggest fault of LCDs is their relatively limited contrast ratio. As long as the LCD rgb filters are deep (saturated) enough, you'll get 99% of what you want in a color image, as the b/w OLED will control the (almost infinite) contrast ratio (as long as it's around 4000:1 I think you get an excellent image for most purposes) Now if the OLED resoluion is less than that, well, edges in the image may look a little softer? |

Sony is already selling the OLED's, but you can't really do much with 11'.
