Thumbs up How Much Will Harry Potter 8 Make in its First Weekend?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 looms huge over the upcoming weekend. Everything will be laid to waste including Transformers 3 . Several 2011 box office records are certain to fall: Single Day and Initial Three Day Weekend will belong to Harry and the gang. I will even go as far as to predict that it will beat Cap next week. Since the beginning this has been my pick for top domestic and overall box office film of 2011 . 94% fresh @ RT with 100% fresh from Top Critics and 96% "Want to see it score". So, How much for Potter? My guess $142 million initial weekend with $62 million for the first day .

Like TDK in 2008, this final HP film is an Event and TF 3 will get knocked down to 2nd place this weekend.

I forgot to mention that it will probably set a new foreign initial weekend record...in the UK for sure .

140m minimum but I'm not convinced it will best TDK'S 158.4. It will come rather close, though... especially given those critics' reviews. I wonder what the 3D market share will be (probably huge, in excess of 60%).

I think this movie will make enough money in the US alone to make people question whether or not this country is really in a recession. In other words, CRAZY MONEY. I'm guessing $150M (US Box Office), at the most.

Wow, the new independently-owned theater where my lady lives is charging $8 for 3D at 10:15am on Saturday! Looks like we won't be contributing significantly to that 150m.

$147M, falling short of Spider-Man 3 and The Dark Knight in dollars and attendance me thinks.

As for what Titan raised in the OP, I think it is more likely than not that it tops Captain America for #1 next weekend. Shame, it'll make Cap one of only 3 or 4 Marvel movies that didn't open at #1 if it does.

I'm on the other side of the fence as Titan with total box office for the year though

Transformers 3 has been my pick for Domestic box office from the beginning, and I still think it will be. Though Potter obviously has the worldwide crown locked up.

Lucky s.o.b. That'd run me around $13-$16 at smaller local theaters. The beauty of living in the Entertainment Capital of the World (The real one.
Not the fake version...Vegas ), I guess.

Well, when they make it, it'll probably make more than Harry Potter 7.2!

I just think this film has all the goods to create box office madness (at leat opening weekend). Right now 36/34 reviews are positive...very positive and the two negs are from the same Australian blog and are really not very negative at all. The marketing has been top notch and every indication is that this movie is really well made. Transformers 3 will still do around $25 million for the weekend and should be around $325 million after the weekend is over.

How high are you expecting it's final domestic total to be?

I'm thinking $330M-ish.

I seriously doubt that the 3D share will be more than 40%. Last HP my local theater was the highest grossing theater in the U.S for midnight showings for 7.1, and by the looks of it will be for 7.2 as well, and there are a grand total of 3 showings in 3D (not counting Imax). Compared that to 16 showings in 2D, and some of the 3D shows are not completely sold out, and from the best I can tell 90% of the 2D shows are completely sold out.

3D is over, it will contribute to the total gross sure, but not over 60%. One of the producers from avatar only suspected that 3D contributed to around 49% of the market share.

This is going to be HUGE!! Highest opening of the year.

my local theater has 22 screens, 10 of them are showing HP 7.2 at midnight (Thursday into Friday) and ALL of them are sold out. hell, some friends were gonna go Friday night since they work Friday morning, and all night showings (then like, 4 screens) were all sold out. so they were gonna get afternoon tickets - ALL SOLD OUT.

this is gonna make enormous money.

Out of the theaters here there are a total of 12 2D showings and 3 3D showings.

all but 2 of the 2D's are sold out and all of the 3D are not sold out yet.

To me this has Star Wars Ep. III feel as far as sell outs and the theaters being packed.

Estimated theater count for this one is 4,200.

For midnight it'll be on 6 of our 10 screens. Evenly split between 2D and 3D.
That's the most I've seen our theater have for midnight showings that I remember.

Then they will have 11 showings per day for the first week; 6 in 3D and 5 in 2D.
