Default Questions about PS3 as blu-ray player

Hey guys,

I'm still having problems with my sony bd-s350. I found a great deal on a ps3 slim. I have a few questions about the player before I make the purchase. As a blu-ray player can it bitstream all audio codecs? Are there any features the ps3 lacks or that I should be worried about?(anything the bd-s350 can that it cant?) Is there anything the PS3 slim cant do with either audio or video that current players can? I know of the 3D issues with in the PS3 and I am not concerned as i have no interest in 3D. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm just looking for a definitive answer.

Thanks!

ps3 slim can bitstream all hd audio formats. still one of the fastest bd players around. there is nothing much it cant do except for 3D which you have mentioned.

PS3 is far better than BD players. Go for it.

I haven't used my PS3 as a blu ray player in a while, but I think it's still a great player.

If you use a universal remote, the PS3 does not have an IR port. If you own a logitech remote, you'll need to buy their proprietary dongle for $60 to get it work with the PS3, but does not work with other remotes.

The PS3 also lacks multichannel analog outputs (which many Blu ray players lack), this isn't a deal breaker, but if you own a older non HDMI receiver, it may be. The PS3 (Slim) can bitstream HD audio, just like any bitstream player, although encoding through the player (any player) is the same quality as using the receiver for the job IMO.

I'm not so sure about that! PS3, is still primarily a game console. Blu-ray compatibility is secondary.

Default Please need some help - can't figure out what is happening

Hi There,

Something weird is happening and I wanted to ask for some help. Thanks to anyone who responds.

I wanted to watch the movie Sunshine on my PS3. I rented it, put it in, and began watching. Directly after the scene with the psyc officer watching the sun there is a scene with all of them sitting around the table. As soon as that scene starts the enhanced viewing mode kicks in and a pip comes up, taking out the dialog and replacing it with a crew member talking about how they built the set. I went to the special features area and tried to diable this feature, and although it did have a yes / no, it was greyed out. I had to stop watching it and I took it back.

I went to another blockbuster, rented it again, and the same thing happened. So, I returned that movie and had them put it into their on site PS3, and it happened there too. The onsite PS3 guru could not figure it out.

From what I can tell, anyone who rents that flick and plays it on a PS3 is going to see this issue based upon two separate movies and two separate PS3's having the issue.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so can anyone please tell me how to get the enhanced viewing crap to turn off?

Thanks,
Kccar.

You should do a search for Sunshine PIP issue there it has been discussed about 35000 times. It is a disk authoring incompatibility between the 3D blu-ray spec and the older PIP tools used to author that disk. It does this on just about every 3d enabled player on the market including the panasonic dmp-bdt350 and the sony 3d players starting with the x60 models and even gasp the almighty Oppo BDP-93 the primary difference is most of the players have a PIP button that can turn it off. You will need to locate a copy of the movie that has already been replaced. So to paraphrase no it is not just you.

Sorry

Its not just you and your PS3...this is happening to numerous people. I have read numerous reports of people encountering this event using a multitide of different players (Sony BDP-BX57, Sony s570 ect.). Bobby explained it exactley in the above posts. If you own the movie, 20th Century Fox is offering replacement discs at no charge. Call customer service at 1-888-223-4369. You'll receive your disc in one to two weeks.

Default Sunshine and the PS3 PIP issue

Thanks for that. It sounds to me like if I hadn't accepted the last PS3 3D update f/w it would probably have worked.

I'm only renting it now, but I'd like to buy it, so I feel better about it now.

Thanks again, and I did try to search, but apparently I suck at that.

Thanks for the help. Analog audio would be nice but im not concerned i have no use for it. I use my Onkyo TX-SR607 as my remote. Does anyone know if I use my onkyo remote as a remote with the Logitech IR adapter if the onkyo would recognize it? Thanks again though I'm definitely considering it. How does the PS3 handle 7.1 also? Are there any problems there?
