W.E tells the story of two fragile but determined women - Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) and Wallis Simpson - separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Winthrop is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But Winthrop's research, including several visits to the Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple's life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, the film intertwines Wally's journey of discovery in New York with the story of Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D'Arcy), from the glamorous early days of their romance to the slow unraveling of their lives in the decades that followed.[

I'm getting a total "A Single Man" vibe. Like each still from the movie is a work of art.

It'll be either really suprising and art house-esque, or a simple, basic mess.

I have never seen so many amusingly vitriolic reviews from all conrners of the british press. Reviewers with normally totally conflicting views and tastes seem to have come together to mock this film and its ludicrous revisionist take on history.

One thing they all do praise though: The costumes look nice

Yes! This film is very shallow, but I feel Madonna has a knack for two things:
1) getting pretty good performances
2) Capturing mood through lighting, ediying and framing

The latter can be attributed to the expressionistic styles of the directors she's worked with (especially music video).

Ultimately, i'd like to see her tackle subject matter she has a better grip on.

Do you reckon this is her, though? I have a feeling that there was a ghost-director working with her in this process and helping her through.

Andrea Riseborough is great in this film, but the film itself is terrible, and the song over the ending credits is just a slap in the face to common decency.

It's more than probable. I make a small note of it toeards the bottom (class was about to start so I didn't have time to add to what I wrote, much less autocorrect)

It's a failure to be sure, but its no where near as contemptable as everyone makes it out to be. If nothing else, it gives further insight into Madonna.

You mean "Masterpiece"? It's a pretty terrible song. Nearly any song off of MDNA is better.

It's no Ray of Light but MDNA is still better than Hard Candy.
