Default Movies that should be in everyone's collection

Which movies do you consider to be staples of the industry that must be owned by movie fans the world over?

First off Predator. No matter the DNR or picture quality this one was my first love and I know alot of people will agree. Bad film stock and grain will never erode the intensity of this film when viewed in full HD. A must own for every collector.

A list of others that people may or may not have.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, what more can I say? Superb!
Star Wars, when it finally comes out.
Terminator 2, really broke the mold no matter which version of the film you have.
TDK, obviously.
Jaws, perhaps the greatest summer blockbuster of all time. Hurry up Steven!
Jurassic Park, eventually when it comes out.
Casino Royale, I had to mention this one as it's just awesome on every level.

Honorable mentions
Aliens
Blade Runner
While both are brilliant films in their own right, but may not appeal to every movie fan as they are more of an acquired taste especially BR.

I generally think of old classics that have stood the test of time:

The Wizard of Oz
Ben Hur
The Ten Commandments
Casablanca
Citizen Kane

Stuff like that. There are a lot more, but at this late hour, that's what rolled off the top of my head.

Great choices as I have at least 3 out of the 5 you listed. You could also roll Gone With the Wind into that list. However as brilliant as Ten Commandments is, and I think everyone should view it, it is a religious film that people will not watch based on those grounds. Sad really.

Because we are all different people, I can't think of titles that belong in everybody's collection. It's like stating what CD everyone should have, or what book everyone should own.

Still, fun idea for a thread.

I'd say there are some, but very few, must-owns for every blu-ray aficionado. One I can think off off the top of my head is Baraka. It's not locked to any certain genre, it's just a beautiful look at everyday life throughout the world (with stunning A/V I might add), and I believe everyone will be able to enjoy this piece.

Wow, just seen the trailer of Casino Royale and it looks like a pretty god damn film action packed.

I'll now see about buying the BD.

They should have what they personally like, I'm not going to force my opinion on others what I think they should like!

So what the hell is TDKR and why is it so hard to spell on this forum? Honestly everyone abbreviates everything without realizing that sometimes different movies can have the same abbreviations. Not trying to be rude it's just annoying when people post abbreviations without realizing not everyone can read minds.

As for the thread topic, nope not a single universal movie has been posted in even this thread, every one who posted has mentioned at least one movie I would never own and I am sure my list would be filled with movies you all would never own.

BUT to play along my list of everyone should own movies would be this,

Star Wars

Gremlins

Mallrats

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Back to the Future

Terminator 1-3

Ghostbusters

Lethal Weapon 1 and 2

Batman (1989)

Transformers (2007)

Transformers- The Movie (1986)

Little Nemo

Shrek 1-4

and that would be my list of everyone should own movies.

I would not pick Lord of the Rings because *gasp* I hate those movies, I would not pick Godfather because I never seen them and I would have to watch them before buying them, I would not say Wizard of Oz because I grew up in KS and it comes on TV more than enough I am basically sick to death of it, I would not say every Disney classic because I only like certain ones and even those I would probably be ok with the DVD's except Peter Pan, and maybe Jungle Book, I would not say baraka because I never heard of it and I always think of the Mortal Kombat character, I would not say any concert videos because I hate live shows, I would not say Pixar because of all their crap I have only liked 2 movies, Incredibles and Monsters Inc the rest nope, I would not say Exorcist, Fight Club or seven because of the first two I hate and the third one never seen.

So in conclusion,

This. A lot of the titles that have been suggested so far are movies I don't personally like, and I don't buy movies strictly on how wonderful the PQ is, or because they make you seem like such a prestigeous collector. I buy movies because I like them.

I think it's a little silly to buy a movie and not watch it because it's something someone deemed is an essential title to any collector. Like Criterions, a lot of people buy them but don't watch them. This is no different, owning a movie and forcing yourself to watch it because it supposedly has the best PQ EVAR!!!!1111eleventy11!!! on BD, when you really don't like the movie all that much.

PQ is important, don't get me wrong, but to buy something because someone says it's the best, when you yourself can't even stand it, that just blows my mind.

I'm probably going to get crapped on for that opinion.
