Great news. It seems like Park Circus is becoming a major player in releasing classic films on Blu-Ray in the UK.

I've been really on the fence about upgrading the non-anamorphic criterion.

The Anamorphic DVD, I thought but passed. The BD I was close, but no new extras so...

I'd want to know how this Park Circus disc will stack up.

CHARADE (1963)
Director: Stanley Donen
Starring: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn
Running time: 109 (+ extras)
Release date: 24 October 2011
Format: Dual Format
Price: £19.99

With elements of screwball comedy, this sparkling thriller has been called "the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made". Stanley Donen's 1963 Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning feature Charade is a romantic suspense thriller starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Filmed on location in Paris, the story centres on a young woman who meets a charming stranger on a skiing holiday. She returns home, planning to ask her husband for a divorce, but finds all of their possessions gone. The police notify her husband has been murdered and when she discovers that he was responsible for stealing from the US government, an elaborate charade begins, in which nothing is what it seems to be.

Now beautifully restored in high definition, this Dual Format Edition includes the theatrical trailer and a photo gallery.

It's a shame I bought the Criterion of this already. I figured the UK would never see a release on blu-ray since it is public domain here. Well done Park Circus for investing the money.

I'm really looking forward to view this but sadly it does not have any subtitles. Seems like a company policy based on their previous work.

If true, that's completely ridiculous, there's absolutely no excuse for lack of subtitles these days. I have hearing problems and my heart sinks whenever I come to watch a blu-ray and find no subtitles. I tend to feel that reviewers should perhaps be deducting a star off the audio(?) portion of the review for this.

I could not agree any more with you. And I am noisy when I have to be:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Contr.../17899/#Review

You will be surprised (or not) how many sales some of the studios lose when they do not include optional subtitles because people get so upset. In France, for instance, the issue became so big that since last year all distributors are required by law to include optional subtitles.

Great stuff Pro-B, good to see someone taking a stand I just can't understand it, I may be completely wrong but I would have thought that adding subtitles to a blu-ray would be relatively inexpensive, certainly compared to a/v remastering costs etc.

Optimum does appear to be one of the worse offenders in this regard, certainly their blus of The Ladykillers and Mulholland Drive both have no English subtitles. It's all the more infuriating because they've been releasing such great films and so it's hard to resist the temptation not to buy on principle!

With respect, I think the cost of including subtitles vs the loss of the sales doesn't stack up. On a release like Charade, the number of people who won't buy it without subs is likely <100. The cost of adding subs to the master is likely more than the income from those sales.

You got to be kidding.

It is an insult to not include them, and kudos to the French for making it a legal requirement. I wish other countries would follow suit.

It might not come with subtitles but at least it looks good. I'll probably purchase an region free BD player and import this from the Criterion Collection. Really don't want to support companies who do not respect viewers.

Having subtitles created for a film is very expensive, so often companies don't do it unless absolutely neccessary.
