Lots of sanding and finishing this weekend. As all components of the cabinet (except for final trim) have been fabricated and fitted (fit?), I disassembled everything for finishing. One final thing that needed done was to drill the holes for the shelf supports.
IMGP0164sm.jpg All three door frames were stained and finished with two coats of lacquer. I have some minor "blob" sanding to do, and then each will be given a third coat of lacquer. IMGP0165sm.jpg The cabinet base was sanded and given a coat of stain. IMGP0166sm.jpg And the underside of the top was sanded, stained and given one coat of poly. I elected not to waste my good lacquer on the inside of the top, as it will not be seen by anyone. IMGP0167sm.jpg Finally, I was able to get all cross pieces sanded, stained and coated with two coats of lacquer. I also got the cabinet sides sanded, stained and the inside lacquered. Two coats looked good, but I think one more coat will go on tonight for added protection. IMGP0168sm.jpg I'm really liking the lacquer finish. It allows the wood's natural beauty and grain show through without the plastic look of polyurethane. Once you understand how to properly apply it, it also goes on a lot faster (with less trouble) than poly. That's it for this week. I'll be getting some more finishing done during the week, as I'll be out of town next weekend. Things are starting to come together rather nicely. Hopefully this project will be complete before the end of the month. ![]() |

Thanks all for the compliments. This is actually turning-out better than I had expected, and I'm anxious to finish. This is the time to slow down, though, as you do not want to rush through the finishing process.

Not much of an update tonight, as I was out of town all weekend and most of the week. I was, however, able to get several coats of lacquer on the base section and also got the feet stained and lacquered. Hopefully I'll get some more work done tomorrow night and through the week.

Hey man, great job on the cabinet build. I'm jealous of your router table.
Next year I should have my Storage shed built (12x16) then I can actually use my garage for something. Last edited by Deadset; 08-18-2011 at 01:41 PM. |

I finally got the last of my structure finished, sanded and stained last night. I should be able to get 3-4 coats of lacquer on them this weekend, which means final assembly is just around the corner (finally!). I'll update photos this weekend. |

Just a few shots of the doors tonight. I bought a sheet of perforated steel from Amazon to use for the inserts. This allows good air flow and the ability to use the IR remote while keeping the doors closed and equipment semi-hidden. After cutting the pieces to fit with a jig saw, I sanded them, applied two coats of spray primer and 3 coats of satin black spray paint. I think they turned-out decent.
Cutting: IMGP0255sm.jpg Dry fit, prior to painting: IMGP0257sm.jpg Final assemblies: IMGP0264sm.jpg Other than that, the remaining time was spent putting the finishing coats of lacquer on the remaining middle upright pieces. With those now done, I'm ready to begin the final assembly this week. That's it for now, as we'll be moving my daughter into her dorm tomorrow. ![]() |

lookin' good, Ric. i really like the perforated metal, looks better than fabric and will last much, much longer.
gettin' close to finished. i'm actually excited to see what it's gonna look like (awesome, i'm sure). when i went back through and was re-reading the thread, i had to have a little quiet moment for your jigsaw. i have that exact same jigsaw. mine is still going strong. it belonged to my dad and now it's mine. if it ever dies (which i'm sure it will one of these days) i'm gonna buy a cordless model. my friend has one and it's better than my corded one. |

Thanks. I'll be assembling the thing tonight and then working on the final trim work and finishing through the week. This is the part where I need to force myself to take my time. When you get close to the finished product, I sometimes find myself rushing to get it done, which leads to mistakes and problems. I don't want that now!
