Default Blu-rays in DVD Packaging: Does Anyone Buy Them?

Disney has been doing this for a dew years now. And Universal is jumping on as well. I know they're thinking that people who have not converted would buy them so they can have the blu-ray ready when they make the upgrade, but still store it with their collection. But, seeing as how many of us have already upgraded, I wanted to ask those people - you guys - do any of you buy them, or at least provide input into why they are put? Because I just find it so useless. Anyone else?

Nope, this is why I haven't bought the first season of Louie.

That's a good point, releasing these "blu-rays" (I personally don't consider a blu-ray in DVD packaging a blu-ray) can slow sales, especially if they are the only version released.

I generally avoid them. I inadvertently purchased Bambi in the DVD packaging and it looks off amongst other Blu-rays, and the inserts in the case are Blu-ray sized, so they don't always stay in place.

I avoid them at all cost...I'd rather wait for another release or import the title.

'Louie' can be purchased with the Blu-ray package too... And I don't see how a Blu-ray in a bigger package isn't a Blu-ray. Does it play in 480p because the box is bigger?

Never ever ever. I collect as much as I watch, so I can't stand any non-standard packaging (yes including digibooks and movies like Taxi Driver).

there are probably more of those people than irrational blu-ray.com users. don't see how it matters, myself.

yeah, unfortunately taxi driver sticks out like a sore thumb in my collection as
well. its a nice packaging, but i just wish they would keep these digipaks
in regular bluray size as well.
i know many members like to display them on extra shelves proudly, but
once your collection reaches a certain count, space starts to matter.
as for blurays in dvd cases: most useless practice ever!
i think bluray collectors purchase blurays and those who haven't made the switch purchase dvds. so what target group is suppose to purchase
blus in dvd packaging?
i dont think mixing these sizes on shelves is especially nice on the eyes

I bought a couple of them used, and then promptly put them in blu-ray cases that I'd bought.

DVD cases won't fit on my Blu-ray shelving, so I don't buy them if they have the taller cases.

Aren't all Criterion releases in DVD cases? I know Fish Tank sticks out in my collection.

I think those are meant for people who prefer not to switch to blu-rays because they think that the cases would look to small compared to DVDs. The studio wants everybody to switch to blu-rays. So that's probably why they came up with idea of Blu-rays in DVD packaging: to encourage DVD customers into switching to blu-ray without messing up their shelves.

You guys try to avoid them because the exact same reason, that the cases would look bad sticking out, because your collection only consists of Blu-ray cases. So don't blame studios for coming up with this genius idea.

Yes, Eden of the East - King of Eden. I kept the blu-ray disc and donated the DVDs (and the sucky DVD-sized case) to the library.

No, I prefer the Blu-ray packaging, instead of the DVD case(s) to differentiate between the two formats, when they're stored on racks.

No, they are clear Amaray cases, not DVD sized at all. They are more like PS3 game cases (if not exactly the same). Same dimensions as generic blu-ray case, except maybe a little thicker to accommodate Criterion's booklets.

Now that i look at Fish Tank case and compare it to a DVD case i see that you are correct.

The fact that some are in a DVD case really doesn't bother me, I just don't see the point of it. The idea of Blu-ray+DVD+digital copy in general I don't understand, I don't really care about the case. Digital copies aren't even HD, they are SD.

I've noticed a few titles that were already out in blu, got a Blu-ray+DVD release months/years later. It's almost like we are going backwards. I almost wish studios would stop producing DVD entirely, to start forcing more people to adopt blu-ray. But as long as people buy multiple editions, including these "combo-packs" I guess studios will keep on doing what they are doing. I don't really see the point. Hopefully the prolonging of DVD format, doesn't hurt blu-ray from getting all the titles as a format that it otherwise could. (especially 1920's era silent films, and 1930's-1950's era Hollywood which has been VERY slow to arrive on blu-ray, even nonexistant in some genres. Yet DVD's keep getting bundled and rebundled...).
