Onkyo 609, Pioneer 1121,

go to http://www.accessories4less.com and look at the Marantz 5005 and onkyo 708, those will be better then the others above.

Accessories4less is a great source for receivers. I wouldn't hesitate a minute.

In that case I would be deciding between the 708 and the 1121. Both of these have pre-outs which the 609 does not. The Marantz SR5005 and SR6005 are worthy considerations as well.

This is about $250 above your price range but you won't need to buy another receiver for quite some time. Costco is selling the Pioneer sc-35 for $749. Last month, this receiver was retailing for $1599. It was just recently replaced by the sc-55. I bought one from Costco and received in standard mailing in 3 days.

http://www.costco.com/

The direct link to the page the receiver is on errors out upon posting it. So after selecting the above link do the following:
1) Mouse over "Electronics" tab
2) Select "Audio/Video"
3)Scroll down and select "Home Theater Systems" under "Featured Categories" in the middle of the page.
4) Scroll down and you should see it listed with 5 red stars as "Pioneer SC-35 7.1 Channel A/V Receiver 3D Ready $749.99"

Yes, the 808 is well worth it. Its a lot of receiver for the money. If you can spring for it do it and don't look back.

If I could convince you, use the $1k on just the front R/L, then add the center later. Furthermore, if you bought bookshelfs you could get even better mids and highs, and bass that would be close to the performace of most towers within that price range, and further enhance your listening experience.

What I mean is that these will give you better sound quality then say these, these or these. (simply examples, not one get upset)

Of course there are some limitations to bookshelfs like Sound Pressure Levels and deep bass, cost of the stands($50-150), but then they are easier to setup, better imaging, simpler crossover design which helps with tansient, higher quality components in the speakers build vs towers in the same price range.

JBL are ok, Id look at other options too. JBL, IMO aren't the same they used to be years ago. Lots of good bookshelf speakers in the $800-1000 range

JBL still makes great speakers, but some models are not quite worthy of the price point, and that seems to be the case with these. The build quality is fantastic which does help justify the price to an extent, but the sound quality isn't quite up to snuff when compared to some others in the same price range. This is what I got out of THIS review.

He noted that highs can get a bit touchy and that placement can be tricky with these speakers do to the rear ports. At $500/pair I believe that there are other options available that are better refined. If these speakers were say $300-$350/pair than I think they would be more competitive. They're just a tad bit overpriced IMO.

Not sure how much they are but Paradigm Mini Monitors are a great speaker, and you could probably get your front 3 speakers near your budget.
