Default Sonic CD re-release is official

http://www.ps3.qj.net

Coming to consoles, PC, and mobile devices later this year.

Sega has officially announced today the long awaited digital re-release of Sonic CD, the classic platformer that marks the first appearance of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose in the series.

The enhanced version of the game will feature music from the original Japanese soundtrack, and is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, Windows PC, iPhone, iPodtouch, iPad, Android and Windows Phone in late 2011.

“Ask any Sonic fan to name their favorite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colorful classic zones.”

The game will debut at PAX Prime this weekend, where attendees can try out the game at Microsoft's booth.

Although I had a Genesis and (god help me) a 32x, I never had a Sega CD or a chance to play this, so I'm glad this is coming out. I've heard good things about it.

Sonic CD was included on the 'Sonic Gems' collection for PS2/XBOX/GC etc. a few years ago but this is good for people who didn't get that chance.

I hated Sonic CD anyway.

When the hell are they gonna give us Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

And an add-on for Sonic 2 to play as Knuckles!!!!

Hmmm.... the one thing that worries me is the part that states that it will use the original Japanese soundtrack. I think the music in the Japanese version was different than the US version. I'm pretty sure the Japanese version didn't contain the "Sonic Boom" song, because I recall at some point ...I think as an unlockable extra bonus feature on some other Sonic game/ compilation game... the FMV scenes from Sonic CD were shown with completely different music.

To me anything other than the US soundtrack for the game will be rather disapointing. At minimum I hope that the Sonic Boom song, as well as the background music for the default present time version of the Tidal Tempest level remain intact. Those are some of my favorites from the game.

Not only do I have the game for Sega CD (yes, I still have the system and the game), but I also have the soundtrack for the game (it has all of the music from Sonic CD, plus I think a few select tracks from the Sonic Spinball game), which I got a freebee for reserving Sonic 3 for Genesis at Toys R Us back in the day. I still have that CD as well.

The only console rerelease of the game that I am aware of, at least in the US, was on the "Sonic Gems Collection", which only came out on Gamecube. I think this collection came out on PS2 in some other coutries/regions, but not in the US.

I have the US Gamecube release, and it is pretty cool. It's been a while since I've played it, but from what I recall of it, the in-game graphics were pretty much the same as the Sega CD version, as was the soundtrack. The one big difference, which was for the better, was that the FMV scenes looked a lot better. Visually those scenes were very compressed on the original Sega CD release, being that it was only 16 bit and all. On the Gamecube version, it was basically like watching a DVD of those scenes taken straight from the source. So hopefully they will be of AT LEAST that quality on this release, if not an even higher resolution transfer.

This is still one of my favorite Sonic Games. It's sad that it's so often left out of the various compliation collections. It definately should have been on the Sonic Mega Collection years ago. And it would have been a graet fit with the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3 and 360. I know it's technically a Sega CD game and not a Genesis game, but it's from the same era as the Sonic Genesis games, the Sega CD was an add-on for the Genesis, and that collection already contains the original arcade versions of some of the game in addition to the Genesis ones, so it's already "breaking the rule" of it being ONLY actual Genesis games on the disc.

I actually got both the Sega CD and 32X for Christmas in 1994. My parents have been divorced since I was very young (I have no recollection of the time when they were married, so it's not a bad memory for me or anything). My dad got me the Sega CD unit, and my mom and step-dad got me the 32X. While in the grand scheme of gaming history neither unit is anything to brag about, and the good games for both IMO are few and far between (and I have very small collections of games for each of them), there are a few gems that stood out that I'm glad I got to play, and can still play today since I still have them. And two of those are Sonic CD for the Sega CD, and Knuckles Chaotix for 32X (it's a crime the Knuckles Chaotix hasn't ever been rereleased at all to my knowledge. It's a pretty cool game and very deserving of a reissue).

I absolutely LOVE the time travel aspect of Sonic CD. It may be quaint by today's standards, but I love that you can have a "good" or "bad" Future depending on what you do in the past (or whether or not you collect all of the time stones). The gameplay (which is traditional Sonic, but with a time travel aspect)as well as the soundtrack and FMV scenes just all add up to make a very awesome gameplay experience IMO.

Well, I can't agree with your asessment of Sonic CD (see my above post ), but I am a big fan of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.... and the combo of those two games is possibly the best Sonic game ever!

I was very annoyed when that Ultimate Genesis Collection disc only had the separate versions of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on it, but none of the "lock-on" versions. Sega had some BS excuse about there not being enough room on the disc to emulte the lock-on technology. Obviously space shouldn't be an issue for old 16-bit era games on the PS3 blu-ray disc, but even if they were using the 360 DVD discs as their standard for this, I don't see why this should even have been a problem. For one thing, I don't see why they would need to emulate the lock-on technology, itself. It's not like they have to program it so that, for example, the actual separate Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles game files have to somehow interact with each other to make the combined game. They could have just programmed it so that the other versions (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles in Sonic 2, and the bonus stage games when hooking Sonic 1 with S&K) would have just been separate game files on the discs. That's how ROM files of the games for emulators are often used. Why woul it have been so hard to release in an official capacity?

I was so disapointed by this when I got that Ultimate Collection for PS3, that I went out and bought a used copy of the Sonic Mega Collection for PS2 to use on my PS3 (since I still have a unit that plays PS2 games), even though I already had the Mega Collection for Gamecube and Xbox. It was almost a matter of principle at that point.

I actually had this game on pc in some pack of games that Sega released on pc a while ago, it included Sonic R, Sonic 2 and 3, Comic Zone, and probably some others I'm not remembering right now. Anyways, I'm looking forward to playing this game again, I really liked it, will probably get the version for Android because I'd like more games like this on my phone, Android doesn't have enough quality games yet, although it has gotten a lot better in the past year or so.

I don't have a smartphone, so I don't know much about gaming on them. How would you play something like Sonic CD on an Android or an iPhone? I just can't imagine playing a game like this on a touch screen without having something similar to a traditional game controller to use with it.
