Hello
I have a question, dont know if its possible. I have a server with raid 5 system for the harddrives. I am discussion a thing with a customer. He want to save his information on Blu Ray DVDs but with the security that raid 5 gives. Is it possible to store information on blu ray like we are doing with raid harddrives? Are there programs that support this and are there harddrives that support this. He want to split a digital file to 5 blu ray dvd:s with the raid 5 technology. Greatful for help! /mitmit |

This is removable media so is perfect for backup purposes, so if you want extra protection just burn another disc. No one ever connects backup tape drives in a RAID 5 configuration.
Blu -ray would be too slow for on line storage, not to mention latency issues amongst other issues with RAID 5. There are so many reasons why this is not practicable or even recommended . RAID 5 is only used with hard disk's as mirroring (RAID 1) is too expensive. I would suggest that even if you could get RAID 5 across 3 (or more) disc's there is a much greater risk of problems than with a single blu -ray disc, have two and you effectively have RAID 1.N.B. They are just Blu-ray not Blu-ray DVD's. |

I agree, just burn a second BD copy, wanting to burn across three BDs with distributed parity... why? Just burn 2 BDs and be done with it.
FWIW, I am running raid 5, I have had two drives crap out (at different times) and the rebuilds went great... but to do this with optical media, not such a good idea... especially when you consider that building the array across three discs with distributed parity would require that you have 2 of the three discs just to reconstruct... just burn two discs (one and a backup) and call it a day. |

Thanks
I where discussion this question with our client. He had the thougt that maybe the discs where safer because you need all BD to restore the information. If a BD where stolen they could not restore the information without the reset. We are using RAID 5 on servers and the taking backup we are storing the informatino on two different ULTRIUM LTO3 tapes. This was a new thougt that BD could be the way to go in the futurure. Thanks for all the help |
