Default Quick audio question

So I've decided that my BD's (PS3) look better connected straight to the T.V. instead of routing it through my reciever via HDMI. My question is, can I get HD lossless audio via the optical out. I just want to run HDMI to the T.V. and another cord to the receiver for sound. Any advice would be great.

I agree, the search function is not very accurate.

but to answer your question, you can only get 2.0 Lossless (PCM) audio from an optical cable. For surround (5.1-7.1PCM) from a PS3 you need an HDMI cable.

Thanks for the info So I can't have surround sound via optical then? I guess I'll stick with the HDMI then. although it really just look better straight to the tv!!!!

you can have surround sound with optical, standard 5.1 dolby digital and dts (bitstream)...but only 2.0PCM.

if youre thinking about HDMI receivers...check out these entry level sysytems

Sony-STRDG810 (5.1PCM)
Sony STR-DG910 (7.1PCM)
Onkyo TX-SR605 (7.1PCM)
Onkyo TX-SR605 with Speakers included

The Onkyo would be the ideal pick, but all three of these will give you Lossless audio in at least 5.1PCM for under $500.

Well I already have an HDMI receiver, all be it not a top of the line one, all of my components are ran throught that with HDMI. But I think the picture looks better if I run the HDMI straight to the tv instead of through the receiver. That's why I was thinking of running an optical cable as well.
