United Kingdom Bizet: Carmen in 3D Blu-ray(2011) [Region Free TBC]

Bizet: Carmen in 3D Blu-ray

Bizet: Carmen 3D Blu-ray

Bizet: Carmen 3D Blu-ray

Hi again,

Here's a heads up for all you opera(and 3D) buffs.

Recently there was a limited showing of 'Carmen in 3D' starring Christina Rice in the title role at my local dodedaplex. Unfortunately I missed it since I was away tending to a sick member of my family.

That was in March of this year.

Fast forward to now. I was trolling through Play.com's site and found that the film is going to be released towards the latter part of this month(around the 20th, I think). The releasing company--as if I didn't know!--is Opus Arte.

So I should get to see it after all; although I didn't think the content would have been popular enough to warrant such a movie--and in 3D to boot. This, incidentally, will be Opus Arte's first 3D movie.

Logically, since it's the full production(running almost 3 hours!) the content has been spread over two discs--hence the somewhat heftier asking price of £30.99(luckily play.com don't charge p&p otherwise the cost would have been higher). I'm guessing that, since the opera is divided into four acts the middle intermission will be the point at which the first disc will finish.

This is just a head's up for those whose interests are similar to mine. This will definitely be a day 1 purchase for me and, since it's only play.com who have it on their site, I'll be getting it from them.

Now, a couple of questions. First, who is interested in seeing similar content in 3D? Second, why isn't this listed in the forthcoming releases here on this most excellent(usually) of sites?

John.

Edit: Have just ordered the disc(s) from Play.com so, with luck, I'll have it by the end of the month. I'll let you know what I think once I've watched it. John.

First, who is interested in seeing similar content in 3D? I am.

Second, why isn't this listed in the forthcoming releases here on this most excellent(usually) of sites? First I've heard of it so good job! I believe I was the first to mention this way back on this site as well on other sites as potentially coming out as BR3D.

Key : they should abandon plan to put on 2 discs. We now live in BluRay world not in VCD. I own BluRays that have more than 3 hours and yet on 1 disc (e.g., Gone With The Wind). The very reason VCD got outphased by DVD is standing to play another disc is not the way to go.

First I've heard of it--
But it's a good idea: UK's satellite Sky-3D promos have been advertising all sorts of 3-D live broadcasts from the football cups to the Royal Wedding to ballet/opera cultural performances...
Haven't seen as much of the ballet/opera yet, but sports, news and culture are the same kind of content that gave legitimacy to broadcast HDTV when it first came out--Before PBS jumped on with HDTV over here, it was mostly scattered travelogues and nature, which is what we've pretty much got now with 3Net.

Too bad I can't stand "Carmen", otherwise I'd pick this up...Now, if they could just bring on a little Mozart opera or Tschaikovsky ballet.

But this is 3-hours in 3D, so compared to 2D, that would be the same disc space as 6 hours...

^ You may have a point there.

I looked at my discs and Avatar is the one that comes closest to 3 hours at 162 minutes. So maybe 180 minutes would require 2 discs.

Just an update for those interested. I've cancelled my order with Play.com since their price is the most expensive(£30.99). Iwould have placed an order with my usual site(AmazonUK) but they weren't displaying the catalogue number supplied by Opus Arte(so I wasn't sure what I would be getting--2D or 3D). Instead I've gone for HMV UK since they aredisplaying the catalogue number and their pre-order price is the same as AmazonUK(£17.99--a muchbetter price than Play.com). The given release date is one week away(the 26th of Sept).

Just thought you'd like to know.
John.

Hi,

Just a quick thought on this disc which, despite what I've said thus far, I purchased off of a seller on eBay. Have decided to split the whole movie in two(near three hours is a bit much on a single sitting). So have only watched up to the intermission but what I've seen so far makes this disc a worthy buy. The singing(and, by extension, the audio) is top knotch, as are the visuals.

And, at the end of the day, it's the visuals of a 3D disc by which it'll stand or fall. But there is nothing wrong with the disc nor its content. It's well worth whatever you might want to pay for it(being a pensioner I have to go for the cheapest option). Whatever you spend, I'm sure you'll have no regrets.

In short: buy it!

That's my opinion anyway.
John.

Are there German subtitles or any other languages subbed besides English?

I don't have 3D equipment yet, I could watch it still in 2D, right?

I checked the box and it does indeed have all the relevant European subtitles. However, I have to disappoint as it will only play in 3D, there is no separate 2D version, I'm afraid. It states quite categorically on the disc case: It will NOT play on standard blu-ray or dvd equipment.(My emphasis)

Which is a shame since the 3D is excellent.

However, there may be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel since the copy I now possess happens to be the promotional one issued by Toshiba(I got it from eBayUK) so I can't say that, if you purchase the over-the-counter copy, it may play in 2D. I suggest that further enquiries are warranted before giving up entirely.

My apologies for being unable to help you further.

Good luck and may I just finish by saying that, when you get your 3D equipment, I can promise you'll not be disappointed by the performance--it is truly excellent.

John.

Looks like another example of 3D Blu rays that don't play in 2D. Gone are the days of roll-eye sarcastic comments to the question "Does 3D play 2D"? It was fun while it lasted.

Default Bizet's "Carmen" **WoW**

I just did the first review here of the RealD and Royal Opera House production of Bizet's "Carmen." This 3D experience shot in HD video is beautiful and one Blu-ray I'll be looking forward to seeing again and again. If you're looking for something different and extremely well-done to add to your 3D BD collection, take a look at this. I got my copy at Amazon.com.

Price dropped today. I too was waiting for the price to come down. I was able to get it for 26.96 on Amazon today with free shipping. I am looking forwards in seeing this one.

I've got this on my rental list!

It's very expensive here in the UK too....£23-£34 on average

I remember first times seeing ballet and opera disks in Blu-ray, and there's so much more of the "Live in concert" feeling to see the performers in detail than there is with traditional SD DVD's and PBS.
I can't wait to see how 3-D can upgrade that experience, but....as long as it's something else besides Carmen. Bizet's music is good, but the title character's just too much of a bee-yatch.

I'm thinking about getting this movie being I really liked Pina which was a similar movie and this play inspired one of my favorite movies Carmen Jones (1954), but is this worth getting in 3D for anyone here who's seen it? The trailer for this I think looks pretty good.

Hi Reaper

Just watched the first 40 minutes and loved it. Despite confined to the spatial limitations of a stage production there is still ample, natural depth and separation. Combined with capturing the acoustical ambience found in opera houses, one feels as if he or she is part of the audience. Just a shame more operas never made it to 3D. So yes, it's worth getting.
