I think this movie is very well made, but like The Sixth Sense, it doesn't have a lot of replay value for me. That's what stopped me from picking it up at BB.

I had actually watched The Sixth Sense about 3 times. Will be watching The Others again once I receive my copy.

No, The Others was nothing like The Sixth Sense! The Others is a much better movie. I didn't like The Sixth Sense! To me, it was overrated. Actually, I don't care for M. Night Shyamalan's movies at all, and he's not a very good director.

I got my copy and watched it tonight. YES!!! Probably the first time in nearly a decade. Lionsgate did an decent job on the picture, but for a catalog title, it'll suffice.

Own this on DVD - no replay value for me either. Plus I just find Kidman rather irritating...

So I'll pass on this one

Let me get this straight... you are saying that slaughtering, butchering an blood spillage are requisites for a horror film?

I suppose not, ....but it seems as though slasher films fit the bill more as HORROR, where as NON-SLASHER'S are more suspense-thrillers, at least to ME.

I for one dont care for slashers like I use to. I prefer a more suspense-filled thriller.

I guess it depends on one's individual definition.

Some people just refuse to acknowledge, and accept The Others as suspense. This movie doesn't contain any forms of graphic violence, blood curdling murders, or various monstrous images, to be classified specifically as a horror film, which it's strictly not. Get over it! The Others is NOT a horror film!

That is really a ridiculous thing to say. Horror movies doesn't need to include violence or blood.
The Others is certainly a horror movie. It is absurd to say otherwise. No suspense movie ever gave me chills. The Others does give you chills. Fact is The Others is a horror movie from the old school. And one of the best in recent times. it is in the same vein as The innocents

under your definition, the greatest horror film ever made isn't a horror film.

[Show spoiler]

and yet there are just as many, or even more non-slashers (Shining, Exorcist, The Thing) than slashers (Psycho, Halloween '78) when you look at any "greatest horror films ever" list

I'm not particularly crazy about much of what passes for horror these days but I can acknowlege and accept that slasher films have become part of the genre.

They do not, however, define the genre.

Far from it.

You're in denial, and you are still referring to The Innocents, a movie that was made 49 years, and probably nobody has ever seen, especially in this generation. And beside, I don't think Nicole Kidman, would star in a quote, and unquote horror film.

I agree 100%. Where did the idea come from that a movie can't be horror without graphic violence? That's ridiculous. In fact, I wouldn't be a horror fan at all if that's all that's went into the genre. Ghost stories, classic monsters (Frankenstein, etc), supernatual suspense films, etc are all part of the horror genre. And often the best parts. Any filmaker can gross you out with over-the-top gore. It takes a real artist to make your skin crawl through good story-telling and atmosphere.

The Others is most certainly a horror film. And a good one.

What about Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Wolf Man...four films from the early 1930's that defined the horror film - none of them contain one speck of blood and gore.

Just because you have no knowledge of history doesn't mean you can ignore it altogether.

The review is up over at Highdefdigest: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/5497/the_others.html. The reviewer state this at the Final Thoughts: "'The Others' is a tense, gothic ghost story -- one of my personal favorite horror subgenres.".
