I just recently switched over to the HD world & was wondering if my old speaker setup would still be up to snuff.
I've got a pair of Athena AS-F2.2s in front, AS-C1.2 Center, 4 S.5 Point 5s for surrounds & rears & a AS-P4100 Sub. (Will probably get 2 more S.5s for presence since I recently bought a Yamaha HTR-6090 receiver). Does this setup sound alright? I've been torn between the S.5s or getting a bunch of AS-B2.2 Bookshelves instead. You might be thinking, "Why are you asking us?... Just try it." But I still haven't finished my dedicated HT room in the basement, so I haven't hooked anything up yet to take it for a test run. :P Last edited by Mega-Prime; 01-10-2008 at 05:34 PM. |

The sensitivity on the set is really low so I hope you have a lot of power going to them.

You are right there - Sony receivers are wanting (unless its ES) - Denon or Onkyo are great, if you must go mid-fi the Pioneer has more bang for the Buck but only at the 900 or above level (if you can go Elite).

The Onkyo 905 is on my short list of receivers that I'll use to tide me over until I can get into high(er) end separates (my HT is separate from my stereo kit). |

I can not be any more serious about using cation when buying speakers. The sound to me is like 80% of the deal. That is why I saved and saved and got a better setup then I had planned. |

Not in the market to get new ones yet. Just saw them when I was on lunch today and just wanted to get some feedback. I am upgrading my Sony receiver to an Onkyo 705 first. I'll prob won't upgrade my speakers for a couple years. But when I do, I want floor standing/bookshelf.

i would say the price would be
1 x pair of 685 (mains) 800 1 x Center 700 2 x pair 686 (Surround + Side) 1500 Sub About 500 - 600 this is just my setup idea Still a "bit"Pricey however a lifetime of enjoyment This is the price range that I have found prices have varied and I am in CDN Funds not USD so these are going to be cheaper in the US than here Last edited by sAvAgE69; 01-16-2008 at 09:00 PM. |

I bought a set of KEF 2005.2s from circuit city, they originally retail for 999.99 , I got them for 499.99, they are certainly not the highest end , but for the money you can't beat it. So I recommend checking them out , btw I noticed that some online retailers sell the SW that comes with my speakers for 800.00 alone......

For example, from your link, they state: Frequency Response: 49 - 20K Hz But they do not tell you the measuring points, so it could be anywhere. Reputable speaker manufacturers will list the measuring points as follows: Frequency Response:On-Axis ±2 dB from 46 Hz - 22 kHz On axis means with you sitting in front of the speakers. ±2 dB from 46 Hz - 22 kHz. ±2 dB is the measuring point and means that the measuring points are plus or minus 2dB from the centre line (being 0dB or flat). Without the measuring points, you have no idea if, for example, 49Hz was a 0dB or -10dB relative to the flat response. If it was -10dB, then that speaker would reproduce 49Hz 10dB lower than other frequencies...not at all good. Really good manufacturers also list off axis numbers. This will look something like: 30° Off-Axis - ±2 dB from 46 Hz - 20 kHz This will tell you that if you are not directly in front of the speakers but at a 30° angle, the stated freq. response will apply. |
