Hello everyone.
I am new to this whole forum thing, but I am need of some help. I have just recently bought a HD TV and a Blu-Ray player. Samsung LE46F86BDX (Full HD 1080) Sony PS3 Sony STR-KS 1100 (Surround Sound) I bought both of these items because here in the UK both products have won numerous awards for quality of picture. My problem is that sometimes the picture quality is really poor. When I am watching a Blu-Ray movie and the picture is bright i.e daylight is looks amazing. However when it is dark it looks pretty shocking. It does not look much better than old VHS. Its really fuzzy & grainy. Its terrible. I am a Sci Fi freak, so much of the Blu-Ray movies I have are pretty dark. Now the weird thing is, when its black it looks great. Its all the shades around black that are the problem. Grey, dark blue etc. I have set the PS3 to play at full 1080. Its really doing my head in so any thoughts on what I can do I would really appreciate. Thanks for your help. Christian |

I have had my fair share of annoyances with Grain in movies, but they seem to be getting much better. Im in the States, so im not sure what exactly is different, but what movies are you watching, and be sure you have updated the ps3 to the latest firmware... you may also want to try checking if you have the rgb set to limited or full... im sure there are others out there that can add to this...

Thanks for your help..
I have the PS3 going into the Sony Surround via HDMI, then HDMI from the surround sound into the TV. There is an optical cable going from PS3 to the surround sound. |

Good PQ Sci-fi movies:
28 WEEKs later Spider-man 1,2 &3 The Day after Tomorrow Close encounters of the 3rd kind The Omega Man House of a 1000 Corpses Dawn of the Dead Day of the dead Blade Runner FF4 FF4: RSS The 5th element (remastered) Sunshine is suppost to be good but I have not been able to play it on my crap samsung player. Not so good PQ moives: StarGate - day time shoots are ok to good but the night time shots sucks Road Warrior - day time shots are good to very good, but the night time shots sucks 28 DAYS later - it was just how it was filmed |

Well, from what I have noticed, alot of older movies that are redone on bluray tend to not have the best picture quality out of the bunch, but i do own 28 weeks later and I thought it looked pretty good. Anyone else have any Ideas?

Suggest you go direct to the TV via HDMI Chunky. Baseline all settings on the TV and PS3. Set the PS3 to the best capable setting. If it's 1080p, rock-on, if not set appropriately. Check the picture quality with the same movie again and let us know what happens.

I'm in the Uk and I hdmi with my Samsung 1200 though my onkyo in the cinema and then through my projector and the PQ is fine ...
In my Living room I Hdmi straight into my 42" LG LCD again PQ is fine... As stated above certain movies are old movies but I own the origional DVD's and there is a noticable improvement although not up to True BD quality... Other movies are just filmed that way ... I've viewed the same movies on a 360 and the PQ is the same ... so it not the Technology its just the transfer... ![]() |

Assuming it's an HDMI amp you'd only need 2 HDMI cables for PS3 > Amp > TV. Transfer from the amp is the likely suspect. I'd run HDMI from the PS3 and get a baseline of PQ. If it's better you're confirming transfer. Not all AV receivers have the same video processing tech quality. If it's the same without the amp then I'd be checking my PS3 and TV settings to see if their optimal. |
