Default Speaker Wires

I purchased a HTiB back in 2004 that came with satellite speakers and the speaker wire to hook them up. I would like to purchase some more speakers and the wires to go with them. The speaker wire has 22 AWG on it. Where can I find a place to buy it ready to hook up? I like Monoprice but they do not have 22 AWG. Could I use a different AWG? Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by 'ready to hook up' but you can find speaker wire at any walmart or lowes. Probably want to get as close to 22 awg as you can.

That's the thinnest guage I've ever heard of using. Toss it and get new wire. The thinnest you should use would be 16 AWG, which is common and not expensive at all. Check with Home Depot and Lowe's, don't pay Best Buy prices for it.

Even better would be 12 AWG, but you probably won't need it with HTIB gear.

Thanks fellas for the help, I appreciate it. I guess I will look into replacing all the wires with better ones.

Just make sure the new gage will fit on however it's attached to the terminal.
I've had problems getting 12 awg in some posts.

Agreed... I would be stunned to hear a 7 year old HTIB that came with 22AWG would take 12AWG on either the speaker or receiver end.

It is more the comment where Breah is looking to add more speakerse... does the HTIB actually have more speaker inputs than speakers that were supplied? I've never heard of a HTIB that shipped with less speakers than it could support before.

Back in 2004, I bought a Sony Ht-6800 HTiB. It came with 6 satellite speakers at the time. I recently upgraded the receiver to a new sony 7.1 system. Instead of buying 7 new speakers, I just need one. The speaker's model is SS-MSP88. I am have a little trouble finding one of these to buy. Thanks again guys.

That completes the picture... thanks.

So you should be good from the receiver end as far as gauge goes, the question remains what the back of the speakers look like, I imagine they have the terminals that are spring loaded little tabs you push down... push one in if they are and see how big the hole is for your speaker wire to go in, they likely won't take a 12 or even a 16.

Do you know what ohm's your speakers are and what your receiver can output? Are they compatiable?

Speakers: Model number SS-MSP88. Max Power Input is 100W. Rated Impedance is 8 ohms.

My new receiver: Sony STR-DH520.

Attached is a picture of the back of the satellite speaker (note: this one is not mine)

Use 16 AWG. Larger wire may fit, but it can be a headache to get into the connection. 16 will be fine.

I agree. I was using 12awg with my old Sony center channel and getting the wire tight enough to go in properly was frustrating. Whenever I would move the speaker I would just unhook it from the receiver since that end had banana plugs on it. He could always get some pin type plugs too:

Excellent idea. Might need the ones with a bend in them to clear the back of the speaker.
