Default Two types of Blu-ray cases

This has been bugging me for a while, and I can't find any other posts about it. Perhaps this ranks amoungst the least important issues, which is why nobody's mentioned it (or I just suck at searching for posts)

I don't like those 10mm-thick Blu-ray cases, because they don't match the rest of my 14mm-thick cases. (Measurements according to MY ruler and eye, might be out by 1mm or so, but never mind)

My Blu-ray collection is quite small at them moment compaired to many of the people here, I have 15 discs... 3 of which are 10mm thick with a 'clasp' (for lack of a better word) or the right edge, one of which doesn't close properly. I'll admit slimmer cases are nicer but it doesn't match the other 12 cases, and the clasp isn't tight enough to click in on one of the cases - perhaps it was loosened by all the twisting I had to do to remove the stupid security tags it had dispute being purchased online.

My question(s) is/are,
  • Which cases are more common in the US? It seems the 14mm case (with no clasp) is more common here.
  • Is the type of case dependant on the studio or something?
  • Is anyone else annoyed by this or am I just being picky?

Thanks.

Edit: P.S. I love that all of the cases are blue, I hope they keep that up even when HD DVD is gone. it looks so neat.

It used to be that Disney and Sony used the skinnier cases, while WB, Fox, Paramount, and everybody else used the thicker ones . . . Now it doesn't seem to be studio specific anymore, as my copy of Sunshine, for example, has the thicker case, and another copy I saw had the thinner case. It's whatever's available at the time, from what I understand.

I love the BD cases that have the engraved BD logo. They seem to be the best IMO.

I agree that it is quite annoying. I don't particularly like the ones with clasps myself.

It's not a studio thing, it's simply what the replicator buys and has in stock

Default I hate clasps

I haven't encountered different case thicknesses (I only have 6 BD's), but I noticed that the ones with clasps can be CHANGED so that it's just an opening. I discovered you can just fold down the clasp INTO the case and it locks inside.

Is that what you're referring to?

BTW, it's not a small issue -- I can't stand the clasps!

Here's something that is unique to Canada, though: bilingual covers. The extra annoying thing is that it's not consistent. Sometimes it's subtle, other times it's MUCH too prominent. When a movie's cover is too prominently bilingual, I purposely buy the movie in the States which just has English. I'm not prejudiced against French, but I think it wrecks the graphic look of an otherwise nice cover.

Likewise.

Then you have oddballs like CE3k. Hopefully Blu-ray doesn't end up with weirdness like the "fleshy" Book of the Dead and that other silliness. I love the uniformity of my Blu-ray collection. All the slipcovers and the Spidey trilogy box are thrown into the bottom of the shelf. Eventually I'll probably throw them away.

In my DVD collection I threw out any slip covers, and with the exception of a couple of very old style Warner-Bros. cardboard cases (which I'm tempted to replace with later releases), all of my DVD cases are the same shape and size. Shame there was no consistant colouring.

BTW can anyone confim whether the 10mm (with clasp or 14mm (without clasp) size of Blu-ray case is more common in the States? Seems to be the 14mm case in the UK.

Those clasps are supposed to keep people from stealing the discs out of the sealed package and then returning it. It seems there was a rash of this happening with DVDs and Games. You could make a little slit in the plastic where to case closed and pry the case open, then you could slip the disc out and it would look like it had never been opened.

I'm not sure but I think you might be referring to the differences between the UK and US. I believe the Amaray cases have a depth of 14mm and the US is Nexpak cases have a depth of 11mm-ish. I remember asking some questions when I was trying to find some replacement cases. WickyWoo had some information and I think Nexpak and Amaray were part of the same company possibly???

I actually prefer the Elite case (used by Fox, Warner Bros.). I think those cases have been out of stock as some of Fox's new releases have came in the slimmer case. The problem with that is their covers are cut to fit the Elite case. Their cover won't reach either side of the slim case. Not a big deal, but they look better in the Elite case.

Actually, if you import any Blu-ray discs, some have thicker cases approximately 14 mm while the two styles used in the U.S. are around 11 mm. I find the inconsistency weird but I prefer the cases with the embossed logo and locking mechanism. They seem to have a slightly slimmer design and the clasp can be folded in so that it isn't a nuisance. These cases are also the most readily available as replacements. although lately, they are becoming quite scarce. This may be due to Blu-ray's emerging popularity.

I personally don't think it's too big of a deal whether they use the cases with the clasp or not. I don't mind either way, I just like that the BD cases are about half as deep as DVD cases.

It would be nice if they were consistent across a series. Pirates 1 & 2 used the cases that had the blu-ray logo molded into the case and Pirates 3 had the IMO cheaper case that ad the logo silk screened onto the case. Not a big deal since they are in slip cases but still......

I AGREE!!! I hate those things. After opening your movie maybe 5 or 6 times, the clasp no longer stays closed, and on my shelf the ones with the clasps stick out a little further than the other ones because the damn little door pushes against the back of the shelf.

I had to order some other cases to replace these POS's
