Germany The Gift (2000)

Can anyone who owns this title provide some information regarding the quality? I am an extremely big fan of this Sam Raimi film and seeing as though Germany is the only country it's currently been released in some info on the quality would be great.

Thanks!

In my opinion, overall, the PQ was an improvement over the DVD. There are the occasional scratches and/or dirt on the film and the color is a bit more dull when compared to the original Paramount DVD release. I don't recall seeing any EE or DNR but it's been awhile since I've seen the disc. The disc also has an AVC encode and an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Oh, and the subtitles are not forced.

If I get an opportunity I'll post some screenshots from the disc; maybe I'll posts screenshots from both the blu-ray and dvd to provide a better comparison.

^ Thanks, and if you can take some screenshots that would be great just to see the difference.

Regarding the French release, yes, I'd heard it had forced subs too. I should've clarified that the German release was the first English-friendly release that I'm aware of.

Had this for a few weeks, I'd rate it a solid 3.5/5 for PQ, Huge upgrade from the fuzzy DVD. More than happy with it.

Of all the countries that have released this title, what one has the best picture quality?

Thanks,
Tom

Go for the Scandinavian release from Scanbox over the German release - the colours on the German disc are dull and washed out. Much better colour balance on the Scanbox release

Avoid the French disc as it has forced subtitles

How much of a difference? I already bought the German one a few months ago because I was not aware of the Scandinavian one (wasn't mentioned in the "List of International BDs with Better PQ, AQ, and/or More Extras" thread). Are there screencap comparisons or any other sources that compare the two? After reading your comments, I tried to find another source and I did find one on Amazon UK:

"Strongly recommend this blu ray release by Nordic distributor Scanbox. They have got hold of a wonderful- almost reference standard for high definition print for this release. Colours are deep, rich and natural. No extras on the disc - just the movie. Audio is lossless DTS HD 5.1.

Please avoid the German blu ray release on the Ascot Elite label as the transfer presented on that disc is dull, lifeless and washed out."

Was that your review or another person?

that was my review also - the German blu is an improvement on the UK dvd but that would not be difficult -i then purchased the Scanbox blu ray - was lucky to get it cheap at the time and it is a step up from the German disc. Seems to be listed at a more expensive price now though

I also have the German release since at the time did not know of any other release.

Where could somebody in the US purchase the Scanbox one?

I see it is now currently unavailable on Amazon UK

2 sellers I checked for Scandinavian discs on Amazon UK were Retro Foundation and Vida Entertainment , although the latter seller is no longer listed

I got mine from dvdoo.dk. Pretty sure they ship worldwide, but I'm too lazy to check out their overseas prices... (Sorry, just got home from a 10 hour shift at the local watering hole.)

A marketplace seller, they often don't ship outside their own territory unless they specify international shipping in their listing.
