That was a quick announcement - it doesn't even open until Friday!
But then nowhere around me is showing it and I have four cinemas to choose from - maybe they thought they'd get the blu-ray pre-order out there so that people who can't find it in a cinema might give in and just order it ready for January instead. I thought Antichrist was awful, self-indulgent, pretentious garbage but I've been looking forward to this one ever since it was announced. |

The distribution company, Artificial Eye, does put out some REGION FREE Blu-ray's. Let's hope this one is no different.
I have not seen this film yet, however being a huge Lars fan I have no equivocations of a blind buy. I will be pre-ordering and importing the UK Melancholia. As for a US release I see it being a drawn out process like Antichrist was. It will get here, but probably not as soon as the UK January release. |

Seems as though Amazon.com now has this available to stream. I will probably watch it tonight or tomorrow evening. Hope it is everything I expect of it. I've heard very mixed reviews.
Also I still cannot find any info on if the Melancholia UK Blu-ray will be region free or not. |

This is a gem of a film and it would be nice to know if it's region free and how it looks. Thanks. |

Thanks a lot. Anything would help since it doesn't appear anyone bought it that posts here and I'm crossing my fingers that it will somehow manage to be region free (including any extras that there might be). I think so much of this film that a "good" review will do. 3 or above is acceptable. Who knows if or when this will get a US release. Thanks again.

I watched it last night (PSN download) and I also thought it was very good. The ending is intense and the acting is excellent, particularly from Dunst and Gainsbourg. However, it could be a little slow for some. This is a psychological disaster movie, not your usual Hollywood one.

Things definitely "picked up" in pt 2 (Claire) and I enjoyed it very much. Dunst deserves all the praise, especially since she's been criticized so unfairly in my opinion in the past, but Gainsbourg was just as good. With the way the Oscars tend to work, I would hope if Dunst gets a best actress nomination, then Gainsbourg gets a best supporting actress nomination. |

Interesting film, had to watch it three times to pick up on all the nuances. Dunst's best work to date, but very hard to contend with her performance on Interview with a Vampire. Dunst will forever be the Nadia Comaneci of film, where do you go after you scored a perfect ten at 14 years of age?
Loved Keiffer Sutherland...first time I didn't want to "smack him"...he can be an excellent protagonist! Beyond the film and its set limiting qualities (worked out more like a play brought to film) its the message. Get prepared people...there is a reason for such a "melancholia" outbreak around the world. |

Streamed this on amazon earlier. Maybe I had my hopes too high but I didn't find it as powerful as Antichrist or as moody as The Element Of Crime but it's a much more straightforward story than we're used to from Von Trier. The first 8 minutes holds some staggering imagery and it's extremely overwhelming but the rest of the film never quite tops it until the ending frames. That said, the performances were great and very nuanced compared to Gainsbourg and Dafoe in his last films and a very good and restrained job by Sutherland. To be honest I felt the film could have trimmed a bit here and there but overall I'm completely happy with the final product. Will be buying when it his U.S. shelves. Too bad this is Magnet and not IFC or we'd be sure to get a Criterion release.

France Release on Jan.3 has a different take on the cover art. I like the cleaner look of it.
[Show spoiler] Hope the UK turns out to be region free...I would import this at a good price, since US has no word on a release yet. It warrants repeat viewing and has a "melancholy" poetry about it that I really like. Last edited by RipleyLV426; 11-27-2011 at 02:46 AM. |

I have chills. This is a beautiful film and haunting film. Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg are absolutely award-worthy. It really makes me mad that it wasn't released by a bigger studio, like Fox Searchlight. Could have been a big awards contender. Dunst would have been nominated for sure, and it likely would have made it into other categories. It's a real shame. This is so deserving of the attention. I think with the advertising muscle behind it and the awards attention it could have been a mini-Black Swan. I'm thinking maybe a 50-60 Million grosser. Sadly its chances are fairly slim as far as awards attention goes now. Dunst does have an outside chance at a Best Actress nomination, but it seems very unlikely.
Really wish I could experience this work of art on the big screen. A |
