Hong Kong dddhouse's "Blu-ray Cheap Sale"

Just thought I'd mention that some of the relatively recent (mis)Fortune Star catalogue discs are going for $80HKD (which "translates" to around $10CDN). Thankfully nothing I really have to own myself, but hopefully somebody else will find something worth picking up...

For Jet Li FANS, THE MASTERE (better known as THE MASTER) is at that price, and even though most don't think it's one of his best movies (it isn't, but it was the first one of his I had ever seen, so I have a sentimental attachment to it), the PQ is actually pretty good -- good enough to tell when it's OBVIOUSLY NOT him doing all of the stunts...

Many of these are on sale (even cheaper) at buyoyo.com as well. Though, frankly, I've had problems with both companies lately with "out of stock" items, or waiting weeks for an order to ship because they don't have stock.

I've never tried buyoyo (mostly because I keep forgetting about them) so I cannot comment about them, but I've never had a problem with items being out of stock at dddhouse; I've gotten everything I've ever ordered from them. HOWEVER, it DOES usually take a minimum of a week (usually closer to two) for them to actually ship stuff out. It's nice that they ship it out registered mail, though.

You need to change the default shipping method from Courier to Air mail.

Can someone confirm The Master has good PQ?

(as good as Running Out of Time, Hitman or Once a Thief but NOT as bad as Tiger on the Beat or Crime Story which I found really poor, DNR'd etc)

I'm about to place an order and I'd like to be sure...

I'll take Legend of Wisely too, thanks to Toddly's review.

So, nobody has The Master to comment on the PQ?

apparently not. safe bet is that it is an upscale. The likelihood of this being actual HD is doubtful as The Master was already released by FS on a respectable remastered DVD. Obviously u like the movie enuff or else u wouldnt be asking all these questions so I say, for the current price on DDDhouse, just buy the damn thing. If u dont like it, just sell it to me.

Ahah yeah but there are 2 problems...

- I already have a good DVD transfer in OAR, with original sound and great subs from french company HK Video/Metropolitan in a nice cardboard (as almost all the HK movies that went out in France which doesn't seem to be the case in USA when I read all your posts here about bad US DVD)
- And it would take the place of another title I might also want to buy.
Plus I have to be careful about custom taxes if DDDhouse doesn't accept to mark the packet as a gift...
And of course I'm not rich enough to buy every movies I already have.

So it's why I asked

As Legend of Wisely seems to be in real HD, I thought maybe The Master would also be in real HD

Nice deals indeed, placed an order for Ip Man boxset, Election, Elction 2 & Protege, even though I already own Ip Man UK BDs, I wanted the HK ones for the 7.1 audio tracks

Thinking about placing a few orders with these guys...

1. How quick is delivery to UK?
2. Is the packaging safe?
3. Customs, or not customs (that is the question).

Some of those prices are about £5 less than YesAsia et al.

1. Delivery for me (also in the UK) has been as quick as any of the other online sellers ie yesasia/k2dvd etc.

2. Packaging was in a box (if I recall correctly) either way it was secure enough for me not to notice any negatives.

3. I think you can leave a checkout note (unless im getting them mixed up again)

Overall my experience(s) with them have been positive so far.

worth noting that there's odd places where deals can still be had on new and old hk releases. anyone remember cd-wow... no 'wow hd'? i've recently re-found them and had a few bargains from there... they have various sites for different countries, take paypal, include postage costs :

http://www.wowhd.co.uk/movies/Blu-ra...37/Region-A-73

take a look.

1. quick to USA
2. awesome packaging (very Chinese packaging too with Chinese stamps and string)
3. Usually not bad - sometimes I've had packages stuck for a couple days at customs either in HK or the office in USA.

Overall, I love DDDhouse and the prices and communication is super! I think it's basically one or two people running the site, which is why communication is good and why they send out stuff quickly.

delivery just over a week. packaging is firm brown paper wrapped with white ribbon. declaration values are 'duty free'.

It seems the prices have been that way for a long while. I ordered 11 discs two months ago, after having watched that site for a few months prior. 10 USD or CDN is nice, but if you figure in shipping, sometimes it's close to Yesasia's price with free shipping. But items in stock at Yesasia may not be in stock at dddhouse, and vice versa.

"Out of stock" happened to me once, and they refunded the item's price plus shipping. If the shipment is delayed by customs, it could take a month to arrive (happened once for me). Also, I have never seen them ship with cartons or any corrugated material, only with brown paper envelopes with bubble wrappings.

Does anyone notice some strange filtering going on with the transfer? It seems to make the picture look softer than it should. It doesn't look like the softness comes from the source material. It seems to be due to digital tampering.

"Legend of Wisely" the movie seems to be a watered-down adaptation from a novel by Ni Huang. The original novel is about...
[Show spoiler]a small basketball-sized golden ball that falls from the sky and it later turns out to be actually a small planet. Wisely magnifies the surface of the ball and sees "little people". But in the movie, the ball is merely an alien device.
